OPENING OF ACTON PARK TENNIS COURT [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 April 1927

OPENING OF ACTON PARK TENNIS COURT During- the past month there has been great activity among the tennis enthusiasts at the Acton cottages, which culminated in the tennis court being finished off by the end of the month. The court is in a splendidly situated position near the Acton Hall, and should prove a boon to residents in the vicinity. The court was officially opened by the chairman of the Commission, Mr. J. H. Butters, C.M.G., O.B.B., on Saturday, the 2nd April. Mr. Butters declared the court open by making the first ser vice, which, in the opinion of the on lookers, was "a trimmer." The presi dent (Mr. A. Thurbon) then presented Mr. Butters with the tennis ball used as a memento of this occasion. The first set on the new court was played by A. Thurbon and Mrs. Mc Cullock v. S. Margules and Miss Wilson. The thanks of our community are due to the gentlemen who worked so hard in the construction of the court; especially among them should be mentioned: Mr. J. H. Saunders (preside...

CHAMPIONSHIP SPORTS CUP TELOPEA PARK SCHOOL SUCCESSFUL [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 April 1927

CHAMPIONSHIP SPORTS CUP TELOPEA PARK SCHOOL SUCCESSFUL The silver cup given by the Federal Capital Commission for competition among the various schools of the Fed eral Capital Territory, to be awarded to the school obtaining the maximum of points in selected athletic events, was competed for at the school sports day at Acton, and was somewhat easily won by the Telopea Park School. The cup, which was on exhibition on the platform where the prizes were pre sented, caused considerable comment, and was the object of much admiration by the children who crowded round to look at it. It is a handsome and at tractive trophy of imposing appearance, and is a worthy memento for the suc cessful school to possess and treasure. Mr. Francis, president of the Telopea Park Parents and Citizens' Association, in opening the presentation ceremony, said it was clear from the bright faces and merry voices of the children that they had had an enjoyable day, which it was hoped would be the forerunner of man...

A MUSICAL TREAT PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY'S CONCERT. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 April 1927

A MUSICAL TREAT PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY'S CONCERT. "The man who hath not music in his soul, is flt for treason, stratesrems and spoils." The fourth concert of the Canberra Philharmonic Society, held at the Causeway Hall on 24th March, proved to be an unqualified success, and this notwithstanding that the items pre sented by members were confined to vocal numbers. On this occasion the society's orchestral section did not function, since, on account of numerous instrumentalist members being absent from the area, it was not found possible to arrange a requisite number of re hearsals. Very fortunately, however, the society was admirably augmented by the "Stromberra" instrumental quintette, comprising Mrs. Duffield, Mrs. Arthur Campbell, Mr. C. S. Daley and Professor Heydon; Dr. Duffield, how ever, was unable to perform at this concert. The Stromberra party first piayed Greig's Sonata in C Minor (first move ment), a duet for violin (Mrs. Duffield), piano (Mr. Daley), and this excellent comb...
