Obituary. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 14 July 1950

The death occurred on Thurs day of last week, of a very highly respected resident of Upper Thornton, at the age of 81 years. We refer to Mr. Robert Denholm Allan. The late Mr. Allan was born at Enochs Point in 1866, and was the second eldest son of a family   of eight, and was the only sur-   viving member. He commenced work at 5s a week at Enochs Point. He was married on Jan- uary 20, 1891 at Alexandra, by the late Rev. T. B. Swift.   He moved to Tasmania and was engaged at the Tin Mines   there for two years. He returned to the gold mines at Enochs Point. He afterwards moved to Upper Thornton and worked on   the Diorme and Robb's Reward gold mines. He was afterwards employed by the Water Commis   sion on the Eildon Weir. He re- mained on the project from the inception to the completion. He had resided at Upper Thorn- ton for about half a century. His wife, two daughters Ruby (Mrs. H. Beeveri, Alpha (Mrs....

ORDINARY BUSINESS. The President,,referred to the need for 'gravel on Whanregarwen road, and Cr. Weeks stressed the need for painting guide posts on the same road, with erection of additional ones. Authority was given for the pur chase of a -jinker- mower, for use in the park and elsewhere. The cost of the mower is £94/10/-, plus £7 for shafts. President Davy and Cr. Briggs explained: their reasons for desiring the mover to be purchased. It was made clear that the machine would be for use in the park and else where. Opinions were voiced that the mower should be bought out of the money raised by the queen car nival. However, Cr. Girdwood point ed out that he was against buying the mower out of the queen carnival funds, as the money was raised by that body. for a certain purpose. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr. Thompson reported; Sanitary Service, Alexandrp and v Thornton.-In progress. Clearing, -Forming, Gravelling, Ma roondah Highway near Kanumbra. The gravelling and Trimming of this job has been held up, as the trucks carting the gravel were needed on ur. gent shire gravel cartin'g. Large concrete pipe sections and box culvert concrete sections 'are in short supply. A concrete culvert 5ft. x 3ft. built in place in Bayley street cost £95 complete. A similar size cul vert, if constructed with pipes with concrete end walls, would cost £120, and a smaller 4ft. x 3ft. culvert, if erected with concrete box sections with concrete end walls, would cost £106. There is a disadvantage -in building on site; that is provision for traffic, as a temporary crossing or side track must be made to carry the £200; total, £3,350.-Copy of estimate to be sent to Mr. Squires.
