"Can Imagination Kill?" [Newspaper Article] — The Prahran Telegraph — 3 April 1889

"Clan Imagination ill?" This is, perhaps, hardly the eorreet- form of question that the tritish and Coloniol Druggist puts toitself in discussing the death of the yolng woman at Ifackuney-undes cir eumstunees in which Kceating's insect powder largely figured. Ad the powder appears by Dr. Tidy's experimentato be perfectly harm less, the suggestion is not unnaturally made that the deceased, who was possibly of a hysterical, highly imaginative turn of mind, took-the powder in thefull.belief that by its means her death might he accomplished. The writerof the article in our ontemporary, wethink wrongly, brings forward tweoro marbable instances of whatmay be regarded as practicable jokes with melancholy termin ations. In the ease of the convict delivered up to the scientist for the purpose of a psy' chological enxperiment (the man was strapped toa table and blindfolded, ostensibly to be bled todeath; a siphon eantjning wateor weo placed near his head, and the flul wms allowed to tricklenu...

Drying up of Siberian Lakes. [Newspaper Article] — The Prahran Telegraph — 3 April 1889

Drying up of Siberlian Lakes. The rapid drying up of lakes in the Aral. Casplan depression, in so far as it appears fromsurveyn made-during the last hundred years, is the subject of a Dory interesting and important paper contributed by M. Yadrint. neff to the last issue of the lorefia of the St. Petersburg Geographical Society Two maps, which will be most welcome to phyicEal geographcrs; accompany the papei. One of them represents the group of olboe Sumy, Abyahkaa, Molohi, nd Tehany, in the Governments of Tobolsk and Tomsb, according to a survey made in 1784. The other represents the same labes according to three different surveys made during our cen tury, in 1813 to 1820, in 1850 to 186t, and finally in 1880, and it shows thus the rapid progress of drying up of these lakes. • There are also earlier maps of Lake Tchany, which Sopreoent it as naving very many islands (Pollas estimated their number at seventy), hot they are not reliable. As to thd map of 1784. no eartographer, accusto...

Her writing was so full of pathos, and evinced such,. deep emotion of soul, that a friend accuied her of being a maniae on the sub jeot of Temperance-whereupon she wrote the following lines : Go feel what I have felt, Go bear what I have horne Sink 'neath the blows a father dealt, And the cold world's proud scorn l Then suffer on from year to year The sole5' ielief, the scorching tear. Go kneel as Ilhave knelt, Implore, beseech, anrd Ipray Strive the besotted heart to melt, The downward course to stay; Be dashed with bitter curs aside, Your prayers burlwqucd, your tears delled.
