Australian Industries and Unemployment. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 1 December 1919

Australian Industries and Unemployment. There are hundreds of unemployed returned soldiers in Brisbane to-day. This cruel posi tion evidently does not cause any consterna tion. Some' do not even notice it. Others, merely hear of it, and think no more about it. Others again say, 'It's a pity, can't we do something for them,' whilst an impractical and an assertive element, simply say, 'Put them on the land.' According to this body, to put them oir the land is the most effective solution of the difllculty. How many of these unemployed are fitted to go on the land, and even if they -were, what are the prospects of ? success? The lands available are far from the railways and probably are situate in the dryer areas of the States. If there are so many un employed returned' soldiers in Brisbane, how many must there be throughout Australia? Why are they unemployed, and why is not work found for them ? More heroic efforts have been made in Australia during the last, few years*than at any prev...

The Federal Elections. Ryan's Pitiable Failures. Make Queensland a House of Ruin. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 1 December 1919

The Federal Elections. Ryan's Pitiable Failures. Make Queensland a House of Ruin. It would be difficult to imagine any election campaign in which so many attempts are.be ? ing made to cloud tile issue as in the present campaign. We take two of tlic most import ant; — (1) Out of the dust of war appears Ryan ' of impassioned speech on behalf of the rc , turned soldier. Whilst the war was actually being fought Ryan did nothing for the soldiers. When lie went near the war front and drew men out of the lines a distance of seven miles to hear him speak, he expressed himself in glowing terms of the soldiers valour, and also declared his determination to sec that valour rewarded and upheld. How Ryan kept that promise is a matter of history. He never kept it. He was silent about recruiting; lie was militant against going on to victory. He was a consenting party to peace- almost at any price. The soldiers honour was as nothing, the life of the Empire nil, Australia's Jeopardy ot no account so...

GAMBOL'S CHRISTMAS DIARY. CHRISTMAS EVE. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 1 December 1919

GAMBOL'S CHRI8TMA8 DIARY. CHRISTMAS EVE. 3.30. 'What's tills Christmas everybody's talking about?' I remark to our cat Bunty on the- opposite armchair by the fire. - Bunty stops washing, to look at me, off hind leg still pointing to ceiling. 'Why, it's a day, of sorts,' she replies, 'and. as a matter of fact, it's to-morrow.' 'Oh, lor I' I say blankly. 'I thought it was . . a Joint! Anyhow, I heard our folks say they were going to have it on Friday, and they asked some people to help them eat it.' 'Joint!' sneers Bunty. 'There'll be one or two of them, and a turkey and a hare as well. I shouldn't wonder.' ' 'Ah, now you're talking! That'll mean a rich lick for you and me — eh, old dear?' 'Don't make too sure, you greedy urchin,' she says. 'What's the good of having a lot of extra food if they have extra people to eat ' it?' ? . 'Who's coming?' . 'The usual gang,' replied Bunty. 'Miss Sylvia's soldier' boy — at least, he's not her' soldier boy yet, but we hope he will be before ? Chr...
