MANSFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 10 June 1870

MANSFIELD.   FROM " THE INDEPENDENT".   Absalom Jones, a farmer residing at Glen   Creek, in this neighbourhood, and his wife were on Tuesday brought up by warrant before Dr. Rowe, on a charge of perjury. Both prisoners recently gave strong evidence in favour of the brothers Donnelly, who, as our readers may remember, were within the past few weeks com mitted to take their trial for cattle stealing. The present charge arises out of the evidence then given by James and his wife. On the application of the police, they were remanded till Saturday, the 4th inst. Bail was refused. A new Temperance society has been founded in Mansfield, the members of which bind them selves not only to observe total abstinence from all intoxicating drink for the space of 12 months, but furthermore pledge themselves to try and persuade others to imitate their example. Messrs Rowe and H. H. Kitchen have respectively ac cepted the positions of President and Secretary of ...

MANSFIELD SHIRE COUNCIL. An adjourned meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday, the 1st June, at 2 o'clock p.m., at the Shire Hall. Present---The President, Dr. Rowe, and Councillors Kitchey, Baldry, and Cotter. After the confirmation of the minutes of the last meeting, the following correspondence was ordered upon :- From the Central Board of Health, to draw the at tention of the Council to the valuation and schedule of the Shire Act, which requires an entry to be made by the valuators of the number of persons residing in each dwelling, and to request the Council to accord their best assistance in the matter. The President said that such a course would entail a considerable outlay,as the valuator would have to visit   every dwelling in the district. If the Central Board wished it done they should pay for it; and the collect tion of the census should be in the hands of the Coun cils, as well as the management of the Scab Act; also the Police. In the latter case the ...

The Benalla Ensign. Published Weekly. BENALLA, FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 1870. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 10 June 1870

THE BENALLA ENSIGN. Published Weekly. BENALLA, FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 1870. There was great rejoicing in these districts on Monday last, when it became known that the notable bushranger, POWER, had been captured, and was safely deposited in that limbo from which he will in all probability never again emerge. The mode of taking him was a very simple one, although it in- volved a large amount of self-denial and perseverance on the part of his captors, who seem to have been in possession of information as to his whereabouts. How they obtained this informotion is none of our business to pry into; but for several days previously to-their success, Superintendents NICOLSON and HARE, with Sergeant MONTFORD and a black tracker, perseveringly scoured the bush about the head of the King River, near Bongamoro station, and were at length rewarded by discovering POWER'S gunyah about half-past 7 on Sunday morning, when Superintendent NICOLSON   crawled in on all fours and muzzled the quarry...
