MELBOURNE. November 21, 1874. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 25 November 1874

' MELBOURNE. ' (FROM OUR own CORRESPONDENT.) November 21, 1874,. -. Parliament has not boon doing anything remarkable during the past week beyond' for- : warding the Local Government Bill a stage, and .then: retiring, from -its. labours. Oiic; thing of importance was clicited by Mr Hig inbotham in regard to the disposition of Fiji. It appears that Mr Parkcs has been trying to have those islands annexed to New South Wales to tho prejudice and injury of the ad joining colony of Victoria, which lias done more to supply them with capital arid m:i away settlefs than the^mother. colony. . It wasja; very disingenuous thing ;it is said on ^he part of Mr, Parkes, but I think it is not more so thaii would have been done by our selves if we had the chance. No. 0110 will question tho anxiety 'of tho Premier of New South' Wales to make his. dominion tho A1 of Australia, and quite right too, though it might bo wise if all attempts-'to aggrandise the colony were undertaken with a- paternal eyo to ...

(FROM THE ADELAIDE OBSERVER.); ' It lias. long been an object of am bition with Victoria to secure a monopoly of tli6 ' Riverine . ti'ade, ancl no. pains have. been spa,red to bring about that result. At : first the.efForts_of hex*: merchants were confined to the districts watered by tlie more easterly tributaries of the Murray ; but latterly they .have extended their operations, and are now- warmly disputing the right 'of this colony to the commercial as cendency which from the time of the first opening of the navigation of , the rivers she has enjoyed in the country: through which the Darling flows. -? SYDNEY. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) November 20, 1874. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 25 November 1874

SYDNEY. (from OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.') November 20, 1874. The great event of this week has been the financial statement of the Treasurer. Yes terday afternoon, Mr Lloyd, in . a speech which he read rapidly in an hour and a half, gpve to the Legislative Assembly and the 'country an exposition of the financial affairs of New S. Wales. The main fact in reference to the present year is — that after spending £170,000 more than the estimates for the year, thero is still a surplus of £694,046 18s 5d expected at the end of 1874. And of tho sum spent be yond tho appropriation Act of last session, there -was £96,660 paid out of the general revenue, to the pensioners and civil ser vants, under the Superannuation Act Re peal Act, which the Government were au thorised to pay by borrowed money, but found themselves able to pay without bor rowing. Then the surplus at the end of 1873 ex ceeded the estimate. The Treasurer, in Octo ber 1873, estimated the surplus, at he end of .that year at £655,280 ...
