STRAY JOTTINGS FROM SLEEPY HOLLOW. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 14 June 1878

SSTBAY JOTTINGS FROMI SLEEPY HOLLOW. S(FROx AeN OCCASIONAL COnaSPrOSDEST) Great has been the excitement at the - Hollow concerning shire matters, and much disgust is felt at the action taken by our shire councillors, who have crept into the council through raising the old election cry of " reduce expenses." These worthies no sooner get returned by the ratepayers, who foolishly believed their cry, than they begin to employ extra offiers to do the work required by the council. First there was a second rate collector appointed; then a second clerk of works; and now they have discharged their old engineer and secretary, re-ap pointing him as secretary. Only at about the some salary he had to attend both duties. After this they engage a gentle man as engineer at a salary of £400 per annum. If this be "reducing the ex penses," the sooner a fires:ick be put to the shire hall the quicker. Let these worthies continue to have rates collected, and let a man be' employed to pitch the revenue in...

KOONDROOK. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 14 June 1878

KOONDROOK. [BY OUR TRAVELLING REPORTER]. The whereabouts of the spot known by such a pleasing name as the above doubtless is unknown to nine-tenths, or perhaps it would not be over-stretch- ing it to say ninety-nine hundreds of our readers. Settlement is progressing so rapidly in Victoria that new towns are springing up like mushrooms. Whether the period of their existence will be exemplified by the same symbol time will tell. The inference is, how- ever, against such an hypothesis, when towns are brought into existence through the commercial requirements of agriculture. Goldfield towns are more or less ephemeral; excitement one day, and depression the next - the residents always in a state of uncertainty. This is not the case where commerce is based on agriculture. Progress to a certain extent is slow, but it is sure and   steady. The increase of population on the vast agricultural areas in this district, being so far away from the older towns, requires commercial circ...

SELEOT POETRY.. FORGET ME NOT. - Tellme, dearest; es'e we severe,. Tell me why we hav' to part: Tell me when we meet, if ever, May I ask thy hand and heart ? If your looks do not deceive me, Joyous tidings they impart ; Whisper, when we meet, if ever, I may reign king of thy heart. Ah ! yoursmilesare so beguiling, And your eye3 so clear and bright, That likebeacons they are shining To e're guide me, through the night. Oft in dreams I dwell and ponder On the joys we used to share In'the sunny days of childhood, When love banished every care. Tei ne, dearest, tell me truly Majy I clasp your hand in mine?
