DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE. IPSWICH. (From our Correspondent.) [Newspaper Article] — The Moreton Bay Courier — 4 March 1848

DOMESTIC INTELLIGENCE.               IPSWICH         (From our Correspondent) WEDESDAY, MARCH 1ST, 1848. - Our Petty Debts Court list for to-day contained a paucity of cases, there being only five all of which were settled out of C'ourt or undefended. Mr. Thorne   appeared to prefer a complaint against his servant woman for drunkenness and neglect of work, but as Mr. T. was in a forgiving mood, she discharged with a reprimand. The cases of William Palmer, alias Flash Palmer, for having a stolen cheque in his possession, and a prisoner of the Crown attached to Mr. Surveyor Burnett's party, who gave himself up as a runaway, were both remanded to Brisbane to be dealt with. A pugilistic encounter took place yesterday morning at seven o'clock, about four miles from hence, between James Smith, a Scotchman by birth, but having arrived i...

NEW ZEALAND. CFrom the Sydney Morning Herald, Fpb.lSj We yesterday received Wellington papersTo '{he 8th January, and Auckland news to the Sth in- stant. The celebration of the 8th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Colony liad gone off with considerable spit it. At Wanganui, (says the Wellington Indepen- dent), on the 29th of December, a body of about six hundri-d armed natives came down the river, desirous of entering the town, for the avowed purpose of meeting his Excellency the Go vernor - in-Chief, who was expected to arrive in the In- flexible about the 6th January. Major Wyatt, the commanding officer, sent back word, however, that he would on no account per- mit them to enter the town armed, and this mes- sage had causpd a division in the rebel camp. Mamuku and Te Oro, with one or two other chiefs, would not consent to leave their muskets behind, and thcrefote remained, we believe, at Tutiaki, N g apara, Pehi Toroa, and some others, agreed to the stipulation, and on the fol...

SYDNEY NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Moreton Bay Courier — 11 March 1848

SYDNEY NEAVS. Commercial Frauds.-It has lat«'ly been our painful duty to narrate the circumstances attendant on numerous frauds practised by persons residing within the colony on consignees at home. We have how to lake notice of a similar sinister in- tention, displayed by the sister colony of Van Diemen's tarni in her relations with New South W'ales. By a late vessel from Launceston, a quan- tity of flour was received by a gentleman dealing largely in the article, and working it up for the purposes of consumption. The flour was of two brands or marks, the bags of some being marked " Yates," and the others " (.)." Upon trial, the flour marked << Yates" was found to be unsound, and with the consent of all parlies interested it was sub- jected to the inspection of practical people in the co- lony. The result of the examination was, that about six inches of good flour had been placed at the top of the bags, .whilst all below was of very inferior quality. Tins deci...
