Poor Jews in Jerusalem. At the invitation of Louisa Lady Ashburton, the Society for ,Relief of Persecuted Jews — Syrian Colonisa tion fund — held a drawing-room meeting at Kent house, Knightsbridge. Mrs. Finn, M.R.A.S., gave an interesting account of the work which is being carried on in the Holy Land by the Society. It was started some 40 years ago with the Earl of Shaftesbury as chairman, in aid of poor Jewish refugees from Russia, Roumanio, Austria, etc., thousands of whom arrive utterly destitute, and unable to obtain work af any kind whereby they lice. The society has bought a plot of land within a mile of the city walls (Jerusalem), known as -l Abraham's Vineyard,' the cultivation of which, together with the working of the stone quarries, gives employment to some of these. Mr. H. Hpckaday is the sole agent for the 'Williams' Typewriter, if you call on him or drop a line to89 Pitt-street, he will quickly convince you on the multidude of sterling advantages this machine possesse...

CORRESPONDENCE. ? ♦ ? . : We do not hold ourselves responsible for, or even approve of, the ? opinions expressed by our correspondents, but we wish, in a spirit of fair play, to permit, within certain necessary limits free discussion. To the Editor of the ' Hebrew Standard.' n -|-n us -anon *mp top 1 The voice of him who cneth in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord.'—' Isaiah 40-3.' In the publications of the ' Hebrew Standard ' Nov. 12th, 19th, and 26th, there was written that a Chevra Keddisha was formed. The Chevra is very fine and good, having been proved to be one of the best - societies to improve Judaism. The work of the Chevra Keddisha is to perform the rites and ceremonies to a dead brother, and is called Chesed Shelehmas. It is called Chesed Shelehmas because it is the last Chesed which we can do to a dead brother. The Sifre says that the Bible is the beginning and the end of Chesed. The beginning is Chesed, Genesis 3. 21. — ' Unto Adam also and his wife did the...

Mr. A. H. Nathan is a member of the Directorate of the New Zealand Insurance Company, which held its annual meeting on 12th inst at Auckland. A large number of shareholders were present. Insurance com panies are often called upon to bear heavy losses which no foresight can prevent, and it is gratifying to note that the Company's losses on the Melbourne fire were £1000 less than was anticipated. The J3oard, after making pro vision for the large losees in Melbourne and others ascertained, was able to recommend, in addition to the interim dividend st the rate of 12J per cent, per annum, paid in July last, a further dividend at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum, which will make 11 J per cent, for the year. This demonstrates that the gentlemen in charge of the affairs of the Company have dealt with the exceptisnal situation of the year in a masterly, careful, and conservative spirit, and and are guarding the best permanent interests interests of all concerned. The large business the Com...
