TO THE EDITOR OF THE NORTH-EASTERN ENSIGN. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 10 December 1872

TO I71E EDITOR. O1A F THE NOBRTI EAS ERN ENSIGN. Sir,--As I have often occasion to travel on the road between Benalla and Mansfield, I cannot help admiring the way in which the Council'of the latter-named shire has made the road through almost all their territory passable with the exception of thantportion close to Mr. Walker's hotel. Soon, I believe, theroad is to be made under the foot of the ranges, so that as far as the Mans. field Shire is concerned they will' are long have done their portion of the work. But how is it with respect toeour own Council I Although for the last two years ithasbeen urged by all those who take an interest in the township of Benalla that the fansfield.road should be made, yet this work was not done, and traffic thereby 'provented comring into the township." Now, indeed, the Council has commenced in earnest work that it should have undertaken before. I am afraid,-however, that it is rather late in the day, and all I can 'say is I hope that in the long ...

O?" TiE EDITOR OI 7HE NOATIC EASTERtN EoSIGN. Sir,-Some time has now clapsed since the. corporate honour of our Benalla Shire Council was insulted, by the removal of its President from his seat on the local land board, and yetI have been unable to ascertain that any measures have been taken by the President or the Council to vindicate his personal and its corporate cha racter. Now, Sir, I, as a rntepayer, considerthatsteps should have been immediately taken by the Council, as the representative of the ratepayers, to know why they, as a body, had been so insulted. No reason has ever been made public why the President was removed, and he individually should have inquired ; and I now think that our Council, for its own sake, should demand an in quiry. If Mr. George Sharpe, as President of the Council, holding by virtue of such oflice a seat on our local land board, has there or in connection with his board membership committed asny wrongful eat which the Government consider of such' mo...
