MORWELL. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 24 August 1886

MORWELL. $ t- (From our own Correspondent.) Our Mutual Improvement Society held their usual quarterly social on Thursday evening. Owing to the unpropitious state'of the weather there was only a moderate attendance, who, however, seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly, the programme consisting of songs, recitations and readings, was rendered in a very pleasing manner. The society's report showed that the society was in a flourishing condition, 42 ine'nbers being on the books. The society also possesses a very fair library, which is gradually being made larger, as funds permit. The monthly popular concert, in aid of the Mechanics' Institute, was held on Friday evening, only a small num ber however, were brave enough to face the weather and our footpaths. I notice the new Presbyterian Church is going up rapidly, and that the old Club Hotel, under the energetic hands of the contractor for the new building hals disappeared. The contractor for the turn-table at the railway st.ation has mad...

A TERROR TO THE GREEKS. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 24 August 1886

A TERROR TO THE GREEKS. The Fairfield Shipbuilding and En gineering Works Limited (late John Elder and Co.,) of Govan, builders of the famous " greyhounds of the Atlan tic," are preparing to lay down for a syndicate, a most terrible engine of naval warfare, whose destructive powers have never been approached. The vessel will be built of Vickers steel, and guaranteed to steam 22 knots an hour. She will be armed with Maxim guns, throwing ten 6 inch improved shot per minute, and also a Maxim shell containing 4001b. of blasting gelatine, which can be hurled over 1500 yards, one of which is capable of destroying an ironclad afloat. Mr George Roberts, manager of the Nobel Dynamite Works in Ayrshire, and the greatest authority and expert in explosives, in conjunc tion with Mr Maxim, have perfected the combination of gelatine loaded shells, and last week the experiments at Ardeer were most successful and startling, their destructive power being something awful to Lehold. When this vessel is...
