METROPOLITAN MEMORANDA "A snapper-up of unconsidered trifles." The General Elections. [Newspaper Article] — The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser — 11 March 1927

METROPOLITAN MEMORANDA By "Autolycus," ■ " A snapper-up of unconsidered trifles." The General Elections. Now that the names have been published after the general nomin ations it is apparent that there will not be many divided votes. It Is very Interesting to see that Mr. Paries has determined to stand for. Barossa. Mr. Ward is very cross about the thing, but according to Mr. Davles he has the authority of the president of the party (Mr. J. J. Daly), What the Lubor Party evideutly desired to do was to pica up Dr. Basedow's votes and odd them to their own, which iu right against the'ir avowed principles that they will not run with a candidate of any outer party. Probably Dr. Basedow himself was anxious to get the Labor votes in addition to those personal to himself, iu which case he would have bad a very good time. It is difficult lo say how the elections will go, but with even fighting the Liberals will have a very much better chance. I have been tied to my house for weeks, and all m...

AS MAN TO MAN A Talk About The Poll THIS LOCAL OPTION BUSINESS. (By "WILL REASON.") Saturday fortnight la Election Day. Local Option Polls are being taken, the same day, in 30 out of the 35 districts. The prohibitionists sent in petitions. What they want is not local option but local veto. That is, they want to get prohibition here. Well, any man Is entitled to his opinion, hut you know, it doesn't do for one uian on one side in any argument to think he has all the sense. Like two women yarning over the back fence, "There's a lot to be said on both side.s." The "drys" argument for reduction is that less hotels mean less drinking, but that isn't the case. It only means greater trade for the remaining hotels. Why, 36 years ago there were 160 odd more hotels in South Australia than there are now. You can't tell me fewer hotels make less drinking. As a matter of fact, in a growing Stare like South Australia, more hotels are needed in many places, apd I wonder that the trade is not going...

KATJA, THE DANCER. Real Musical Comedy. Tills universally popular J. C. ; Williamson musical comedy to' be staged at the Murray Bridge Institute on Wednesday, March 16, has the' nlend in quality which makes for assured success; qualities which grow upon the imagination, auu as a produc tion it is far beyond musical comedies staged in recent years. Modesty describes it in the advertisements as a musical comedy, but it is worthy to rank as comic opera. It may be classed with "The Merry Widow," and "Maid of the Mountains" and other earlier productions of the same school. The book by Leopold Jacoo.-.un and Rudolph" Oesterreicher, which has i ueen adapted (in other words rendered into English and up to English ideas) by Frederick Lonsdale and Harry Graham, is excellent, for it holds a reasonably strong and continued tnread of plot. The story of "Katja" briefly concerns the lady of that name, who, with Ive, a former prince, has been exiled from Koruja. They earn a living by daucing at pri...

LIBERAL CANDIDATES AT TEPKO. Messrs. B. H. Hannatord, H. Hom burg, and J. B. Randall, addressed the electors at Tepko oil Friday. Mr. B. Paech took the chair, and .the hall was crowded. Many were unable to gain admission^ The candidates re ceived a good reception, although in terruptions were, frequent. , Mr. Homburg said that in these days electors had to belong to one party or the other. It was either Liberal or Labour. There was no room for a go-between. The man who voted for the Independent candidate was wasting his vote. He had no quar rel with Labour, but. thought Murray was a Liberal constituency, and, as an agricultural district, should he repre sented by those who bad more in cam mon with farmers than those who were linked up with the Trades riall.
