ATTITUDE OF THE FREEDMEN IN THE GULF STATES. NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 30. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 1 February 1866

ATTITUDE OF THE FREEDMEN IN THE GULF STATES. NEw ORLEANS, NOV. 30. TheLegislature is engaged in the discus sion of the Constitution of 1864. The pros pects of raising a crop by the freedmen de-. cline making contracts to work on planta tions next year, and are adverse to working, especially for their foirmer owners, and seem to be bent on same plan for the division of property. There is much complaint in Texas about the collection of direct taxes on the lands as pressing upon the people. Old business men in Galvestown expect a business crash in the spring. The Texas debt, including all items, with interest computed to May 1, 1866, is eighty seven hundred thousand dollars. Genertl Gregor, chief of the Bureau of the Freedmen of Texas, is reported by Tex ans as having made a speech lately to the negroes, wherein he condemned the Presi: dent's reconstruction policy. GRE.ADA, Nov. 30. A collision occurred here last night be. tween a party of the stat? militia, searching for arms among th...
