Latest News from America and China. ELECTION OF PRESIDENT. [Newspaper Article] — Ovens and Murray Advertiser — 12 February 1857

Latest News from America and China. ELECTION OF PRESIDENT. (From the Argus.) Bv the " Simoiln,". from Boston, we liave American.news to the 7th of No vember. The election of the President took place on the 4th of November, ami resulted in a large majority for Mr. Buchanan, the Democratic candidate, und favourite of the Southern States. The issue of the election has been re garded with intense interest m every part of the American Union, ine hopes and fears of the anti-slavery and pro-slavery parties have been centred upon it, and even the integrity of the Union is universally believed to be deeply affected by the success of the Southern candidate. The largeness or Mr. Buchanan's majority can only be accounted for on the hypothesis that fears for the safety of the Union de prived-Colonel Fremont, and trans ferred to his successful competitor, much of tViC support .which the former would other wise have received from the free votes of the electoral colleges. But it is doubful if the U...
