TOM SPRING , THE BlT © PIi 9 CHAMPION OF ENGLAND IN 1824 [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 22 October 1853

TOM SPRING , THE BlT © PIi 9 CHAMPION OF ENGLAND IN 1824 LIFE AND BATTLES From a work published in London in 1829 , now first republished in this country , ^ in the NEW YORK CLIPPER . ] Spring turned out a much better man than he previously rated ; though , it is even now urged , he is not a hard hitter . In fact , it was almost a bloodless fight . Painter , it should seem , did not comp lain of the punishment he received , but of the excruciating pain of his head , and the impracticability lie experienced of using his shoulder to any advantage . The gameness of fainter was too well known to need comment ; but he never ranked as a first rate-fighter , from the conlined state of his arms , added to liis being a ronndPhitter . Spring is , imdoutedly , a boxer of talent—lie uses bis left hand well , though not as quick as Carter does ; and lie gets away with ease and dexterity . He also possesses coolness anil command of temper , and it was deemed very likely he would endeavour to cut ...

THE LOWER DEEP . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 22 October 1853

THE LOWER DEEP . THE TRH I /!* E AND THE SUNDAY TIMES . The following communication will be received with interest by our citizens , as it exhibits in a clear light the artifices resorted to by the above sanctimonious journals to advance the cause of piety , the Maine Liquor Law , and Hypocricy , in our city . What will they try next ? ) THE LATE PRIZE FIGHT . MR . However , my little stock of those commodities , for indeed they are commodities , being now high—now low in the market—the same as any other fancy stocks , iu which good men deal , has been in a ferment and high state of excitement since the event mentioned at the head of this article came off , for you must know I am , one of the unmitigated ruffians who attended that contest .
