SHREDDED FODDER . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 August 1903
SHREDDED FODDER . About one-half of the feed value of the corn crop is in the stalks , and wherever this fact is thoroughly understood the corn grower considers it just as important to shred the fodder as to husk the ears . If the stalks are allowed to stand in the field until after the corn is husked , the fodder has little or no value as feed stuff , and this explains much of the misinformation that is still extant relative to shredded fodder . Neither timothy nor clover would make good feed if allowed to stand too long before cutting . If , however , the corn is cut at the right time , the fodder when shredded makes excellent feed , which analysis shows to be fully as nutritious as timothy hay . The McCormick husker and shredder enables the farmer to husk and shred his corn at one operation , thus saving time as well as all of the corn , and practically doubling . the value of the crop .

»——i ¦¦¦¦¦¦ . ¦¦¦¦ , ** ^ SiDine j imwinn HOG NOTES . It s the pretty keeper that makes the pretty hog . Hogs should have free access to salt and ashes . It is an exceptional case when pigs drink too much milk . The safe plan for the general farmer Is to avoid inbreeding altogether . Brood stock should be separated from the feeders before putting on a full feed of corn . It is tiuite an item to feed the hogs where the manure can all be saved . A sow started in as a breeder too fat will , in a majority of cases , never be a satisfactory one . o ld hogs will stand as long feed ns ever and assimilate it well , making a profitable gain , but young hogs will soon stall . If a hog in a herd gets sick and oft feed observe the extent of the sickness . In many cases a change of feed will effect a cure . A well formed hog is as desirable for the farmer and feeder as for the breeder and exhibitor . If good health is to be maintained hogs should never be compelled to subsist on half rotten or m...

^ mmrr j ¦ ¦¦!¦ ¦ ¦ r i - ~^^—^—^^ | Poultry I POULTRY NOTES . The fall is . the best time to buy young stock . Early hatched birds are best for breeding . Poultry can pick up a good part of their living if they have free range . A pullet is not matured until she is at least one year old . Food rich in nitrogen is required by the hens during moulting . One can breed for eggs just the same as one can breed for milk and butter . A very important item in keeping eggs is to pack them fresh . Lime , gravel and bones should always be left where the fowls can help themselves . Nothing tends more to engender disease in poultry than filth in the coops . As a rule in the fall is the best time to buy improved breeds for breeding purposes . With proper exercise there is not much liability of the fowls becoming over fat . Just before the early pullets begin to lay their combs will swell and become red . Burnt corn is an excellent thing to feed to poultry and is superior to wood charcoal . Hens t...
