' Probably the tuoM oxtermive quarrie of nil free stone or "brown Atone" in the rorld are on the Connecticut river at Mid- dleton and Portland, on opposite eide of b river, fifteen tuilea below Hartford, the capital of the State. The Portland quarried on the east side of the river have been most extensively worked and the place givei a local name to the stone as "Portland Atone." A recent article in the Hartford Daily gtvei an array of facts concerning hiese celebrated quarries, some of which are quoted in this article.
