The newly appointed Minister to the Court of St. James, John Lothrop Mot ley, is a native of Dorchester, Mnsw. lie graduated at Harvard College in 1831, and then passed a number of years in Europe, partly as a student at Ihe Uni versities of Gottlngen and Berlin, and parily in general continental travel. On his return to the United States, he studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1837. He, however, never prac ticed much, but devotc.1 his attention to literary pursuits.
