A Valuables Suggostion. Coal is also morei useful than gold or silver. We cannot; cat or drink silver or gold. Yet, as worthless as are these metals for practical purpose* of lil'e-, there is a palpa-i hie deficiency of them circulating in 1 Nevada. Everybody says to every-i body 'tvait a few days." Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 21 December 1861

EPTick exciting character of the news received during the past week from St. Louis, detailing the operation* of our army and navy—their advance upon rebel territory with the strong arm of the Government, vindicating its "right to rule," seem to give assurance that the loyal Union men of our country will have more than the usual cause of rejoicing during the holidays of the year'6l. The reports of the achievements of the U.S. armada on the Southern coast has been fully confirmed; also the occupation of Fort Pulaski by Federal troops, and the sei/.tirc of rebel property of t.n immense amount, sufficient to cover all the expenses of this great expedition. A battle is reported to have been fought at New Orleans, but its result not stated—needs confirmation. The effort to get up a panic by the encmiesof our Government on the prospect of a war between England and the United States, is a failure. The taking of the rebel ministers, Mason and Midell from the English steamer, is approved by t...

COMMUNICATED. HONORS OF WAR.— [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 21 December 1861

COMMUNICATED. HONORS OF WAR.— What a mockery does the very »pirit of the phrase import! as if aught of fame could be gathered from human misery. How reckless must be that heroism that would aelect it as the path to hoi o ; h >w regardless of tl e very principles on which morally is grounded. War has been callcd "the sport of kings," but. it is a ruinous one, and exacts from all it* votaries a rigorous penalty—blasting into deformity all that was beauteous, and into finline all that was abundant. Viewed through an undistorted medium, its name aInne is hideous —being in truth a vortex of human passions where I'ride and Hate are let loose to vie with each other in their disastrous effects. Hut strip it of its military pageant—take from the victor his triumphal car, and what remains but a grim spectacle of human slaughter, in which the winner and the vanquished must alike participate. M. Dec. 15, 1861, "Why I love you:" by Soliataire will appear next week. SiBTF.II May.—Your ...
