"Just Ahead. " [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 23 June 1860

"Just Ahead. " L. F. WELLS. The miner! hied with anxious fears To test the gravel found; Their little all—the toil of years, Was vested in the ground. And as they ga/ed each hardy man Bewailed his falling stock; No prospect in the trial pan — No color on the rock. Yet still their drooping hopes to save Each to the other said— "Cheer up, and work away my brave, We'll hud it just ahead." And thus within the darkest hour, When friendship's voice is dumb, Hope gives the sinking soul a power To feast on joys to come. No earthly joys are half so grand, No present scenes so fair, No brain-created fairy land And castles in the air. Our highest bliss with rapture rife, Is that by fancy fed, Our dearest happiness in life Is always " just ahead !" [Trinity Journal. The Wanderer to his Sister. As streams at morn, from seas that glide Rejoicing on their sparkling way, Will turn ag iin at eventide To mingle with their kindred spray— 'en so the currents of the soul, Dear sister, wheresoe'er we rov...

New Discoveries of Quicksilver in Monterey County. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 30 June 1860

New Discoveries of Quicksilver in Monterey County. It is situated near the upper springs of Los Gatos creek, which flows east and sinks in the sands at the opening of the Tulare plains, about half way between the fourth and fifth parallel standards south, and to the east of ,the Monte Diablo meridian; or some twelve miles south-east of the New Idria vein. The New Idria deposit is in Range 12 east, township 17 and 18 of the above meridian longitude. Stages now run twice a week from San Juan to New Idria, and the establishment is said to employ some 250 men in their hacienda, etc. The quicksilver is very pure and said to be of the best quali...
