The California Wonder in tngland. [From the London Times, March 14. [ We have information from California up to the close of last year. The intelligence from this singular State now assumes form and consistency of \ regular political correspondence, and indeed, it may almost be said that in tmturity nnd civilization, San Francisco is as far advanced as any city on the \v?stern coast of the American continent. Whatever may be the opinions on this subject at New York, there are certainly no doubts existing on the spot in respect of the dignity and independence of the new State. In the letter of our own correspondent, which we lately published, it will have been seen that the repeal of the navigation laws procured a singular boon for British subjects in these ut termost parts of the earth. The early arrangements at the port of San Francisco were as rude as might have been expected, the business of the customhouse having been administered "in an extremely loose manner." In point of fact...

Fire in Sacramento. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Transcript — 21 June 1850

Fire in Sacramento. Last December a disastrous tire destroyed ' almost an entire block of houses in San Francisco. The citizens were horror-strick- ' en and felt that a severe blow had been given to the city. The papers agitated the necessity of immediate measures towards forming such organizations as might prevent the recurrence of similar disasters. The immediate establishment of Fire Companies, and Hook and Ladder Companies, was upon evciy one's tongue. But houses began to spring up all over the burnt district. Men forgot their zeal and once more thronged the business stieets.
