Dreyfus is on trial opened at ten minutes past 7 o'clock yesterday morning. Capt. Dreyfus entered the courtroom with a firm step, though his features were pallid. He is partly bald and what hair he has is gray and closecropped. He answered the formal questions of the judgs as to his name, age, etc., in a clear, determined voice. He sat facing the judges with his hands resting on his knees, an impassible figure. The trial opened, so far as Rennes is concerned, in an atmosphere of perfect tranquility. Washington, Aug. 12.-The secretary of war has directed that the census of Cuba shall be completed by Jan. 1 next and Gen.. Joseph Sanger of the inspector general's department will be assigned-to take charge of the work with headquarters at Havana. Gen. Sanger was in command of one of the military departments of Cuba for several months after the Spanish evacuated and has been recently engaged in special duty here in connection with the administration of affairs in our insular possessions. The manner in which the census is to be taken has been practically determined as a result of numerous conferences held between the Cuban officials and the authorities of the war department and census office.
