Wvlie 14 Over and out Fast and furious Hebron team is just too strong in Region II playoff championship By Shiela K. Haynes It doesn't seem to matter when it occurs or what the score happens to he, that final loss of the season is always hard to take and it was no different for the high-achieving Wylie Pirates football team as they fell to the Hebron Hawks in the quarterfinal round 42-14 on Saturday at Texas Stadium. "As a team, they accomplished a lot. They exceeded everybody's expec- tations," head coach Mark Ball said. A speedy Hebron defense kept the Wylie offense out of sync throughout the game. "Their defense and offensive line were their biggest assets," said Ball. The Pirates opened the game with five straight series of three plays and out, and were unable to record a first down until their final possession of the half. Wylie couldn't seem to get a break, starting each possession deep in thei...

' ■ '• ''SSrV' 4 - SwtioR B - THE SACHSB NEWS - Thunday, December 8.200S Loss ends run at state title in 2005 One defeat does not diminish a successful season It's been noted that whoever said one loss does not ruin a good season never tasted defeat in the Super Bowl. I'm sure right now some players and fans of Wylie football believe the same thing about last week's 28-point loss lo Hebron, which convinc- ingly ended the Pirates run at a state title. Well, you're wrong. No loss, no matter how large, can truly diminish the suc- Greg Ford cess of a 10-win season that included three postseason victo- ries. Regardless of the margin in the final game, nothing can take away the feeling the Pirates, their coach- es, and their fans felt during the regular season and the playoffs. And there was much to feel good about. First, the Pirates won seven of their 10 regular season games, with all three defeats coming at the hands of quality opponents. One of those, Highland Park, is on the verge of...

Haynes The Lady Pirates put two more in the win column this past week with a hard-fought 48-46 victory at Hebron Nov. 29, and a 52-47 win at Lancaster on Friday. Head coach Michael Oldham said this was the first time the Lady Pirates had defeated either of those teams at their court. Lancaster's fast-paced, high- pressure style of play varied greatly from Wylie's "control the tempo" style. The Lady Pirates had to make some adjustments to win. "We beat them at their style of basketball. It was good to go down there and win," Oldham said. Oldham also said Lancaster's kgym extends about 30 feet beyond "the basket on both ends, and play- ers have to adjust to the feel of not having a wall behind the basket. Since the gym is similar to those at West Mesquite and Mesquite Poteet, Oldham feels ...

I remember Christmases of bicycles and baby dolls, clothes, jewelry and even my own phone line, but the most memorable Christmas Autumn Barton I ever had I can'; even remember what I got. For a time when I was young my father was in insur- ance sales. Doing this type of work brought Dad into contact with all sorts of people from the wealthy to the very poor and everything in between. Now, anyone who really knows my father can tell you that, while he looks like the law enforcer that he is, inside he's a really big softie. For me, it's not only a good opportunity to spend time with them, but to remember my roots and that every generation in my family has a legacy to pass on. Many Christmases have things happen that etches memories deep within us that we only seem to recall once it hits that time of year when Christmas music seems to dominate the radio stations. While I have the funny memories, like the time my mother received the ugliest chicken-shaped house shoes from my uncle, I also have some others that are less pleasant, like the passing of my dear friend Eric only two weeks before Christmas. Neither of those make up my best holiday memory though. That honor be...

I for life December 7 - 3, 2005 - C&S Media Publications - Section C - Page 5 Every year about this time, I spend a lot of time thinking about my grandmother. I've been lucky enough to know both of my grandmother and grandfathers and great grandmothers and great grandfathers. (Until I was about three years old, I had 14 liv- ing biologically grandparents!) There are times, especially at Christmas and Easter ... you know, those big religious, family holidays, when I reflect on them more. I especially think of Nanny and Papaw this Donnita Fisher time of year. Papaw, James Wesley Nesbit, loved Christmas and would stop by our house on the Saturday mornings in December with presents "Santa" had given him for us. He loved Christmas and playing Santa and having all of us gathered at his house for Christmas Eve gifts. My grandmother, Marjorie Faye Hill Nesbit, died Dec. 5, 1999. That was a very hard time for our family because death visited us in two very different situations. I wrote a...
