Current Jottings. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 15 April 1898

Eastertide passed over quietly, both business and pleasure hav ing, apparently, to wait on poli tics . There were plenty of people bustling round in the streets, but there talk was chiefly of the good things for the races, of the Pre mier's peculiar position, oi Mr. Want's resignation, of the pro bable fate of those Ministers who are somewhat under ^ cloucl, oi Mr. " Middleman" MacMillan s cautious utterances, of the ine flowing perorations ol l>io& Meagher, the sledge-hammer hits of 46 Jack" Norton, of everything political in fact, but of little else. Possibly some of our honorable representatives omitted to cook the Easter goose for fear it might augur a similar fate for them selves; but anyway it was a quiet holiday time on the whole, ana the only consolation is that all the fun has vet to come, lnat it will be hot and lively when it does begin seems certain, for every second man one meets is a can didate ior some electorate or an other, and the other men are daily exp...

The Storyteller. The Gipsy's Daughter. CHAPTER I. "THERE LIES A CURSE UPON OUR HOUSE!" [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 15 April 1898

CHAPTER I. , " THESE lies A cuese upon oub house!" It was a gala day at Moat Wealden, for the heir of that rich and noble, estate had come of age. It was the very time of year when nature, in Sussex, reaches the glory of its perfection—the last week of July. In the fulness of the summer splendour, Victor St. Maurice reached his majority and entire possession of estates yield ing ten thousand a year, with the title of one of the oldest and proudest baronies of England. The St. Maurices of Moat Weaiden had laughed in the face of social changes since William the Norman's day. They were a strong, daring, Joy&l, proud, and headstrong race; and in that last word iay the fatal secret of their decay. For this family, formerly numerous, and inter-married with the first houses of Europe, was now only represented by this one youth, Sir Victor. Full of daring, restive to rebuke, and spurning control, the sons of St. Maurice had, for several generations, died at a comparatively early age...

orange. Another difficulty has arisen in oonnection with the Hospital in con sequence of the resignation of Dr. Kelty as one of the medical officers. The resignation was anticipated, as it is understood that the medical men in Orange, with the exception of Dr. Davies, are under agreement to act together in certaiu emergencies. What will happen next we do not know. At the Police Court, on Thursday, Arthur Morton, 28, described as a grazier, was charged with stealing ten head of cattle, the property of Messrs Paddison, Kinchela, and another. It was alleged that accused sold the cattle at the corporation yards, repre senting that he was James Miller, of Cumnock. It was he who escaped from the police on Monday. On one charge he was committed for trial, and on two others he was remanded. The case lasted nearly all day. Messrs Flanagan and Hawke were on the Bench.
