CHARTERS TOWERS SCHOOL OF ARTS TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 1 March 1876

Charters Towers School of Arts TO THE EDITOR. -It should not be imagined that the   proposed School of Arts need, of a necessity, be confined to a mere reading room and circulating library : it can, very easily, be made the medium of instruction in different branches of science connected with the every-day life on such a place as this, where knowledge appertaining to mining -metallurgy and chemistry-is of the greatest importance to the main supporters of the field, the miners. There are plenty of practical and well informed gentlemen on the field who would be willing to lecture on the above Subjects. And certainly more pleasure and profit should be obtained from the spending of an hour or two in this way than could be from the same time spent   in a dance-room or in the bar of a public-house. Again, miners might use the institution as a rendevous where they could converse on matters connected with their claims, &c. A chess club could be formed-a deb...
