WHY COW-TESTING PAYS. [Newspaper Article] — Violet Town Sentinel — 15 December 1914

WHY COW-TESTING PAYS. Cow-testing shows the money-makers The best cows in inany herds are re turning a profit ot £25 or liioro every year. It is possible to liave every cow kept do as well. The loalors, the cows that consume more than they return, are quickly spotted and eliminated when the cow test is used. No successful merchant handles a. lino of goods uu which he loses money; likewise, no progressive dairyman will keep a eoiv on which lie does not niako a profit. The milking of cows iB a straight business proposi tion, and no farmer can alford to spend his own time, or pay high priced labor to milk cows which do not pay. for their board. Let's make the £'Jo return per cow our standard. To build up a prolitable herd tho cow i'B indispensable. It enables tho dairyman to quickly got a high pro ducing herd by selecting heifers from only tho best cows. In this connec tion the sires that are capable of transmitting dairy quality and tempera ment to their offspring can be proved. Tho v...

THE FRONT OF THE COW. [Newspaper Article] — Violet Town Sentinel — 15 December 1914

THE FRONT UF THE COW. Wo hoar a gre.it deal about the pro lit from "milKuig" cows. The subject is not broad enough; it should be ..Profit iu keeping cows." Many who "Keep" cows place a value oil the cow iu proportion unjy to the creaui cheque tuey receive. In other words, ttiey value her sirnpiy ou th© baais of the cash tiiat the cieum brings. 11 tiio cream cheque does not 'pay lor the labor or milking and iee<-i ing her, then the conclusion is that she is not prohtaule. We do not believe this is correct. Suppose we examine ail the sources of revenue. X^irstj the butter-lat from the cow sold to the creamery at a fixed price is expressible in terms oi cash. Second, a portion of the whole milk used to feed the call after its birth until such lime us it is able to be sup ported on skim milk and other feeds. This is worth, for feeding purposes, ub much as any whole milk the cow gives. Third, on every lurm there is a cer tain amount of the milk and cream umk! by the family, an...

DISTRICT NEWS. (From our Correspondent.) Tamleugh North. Harvesting ia just about completed, and although the yields are »mall com pared vritli the average year they are much better than was expected a couple of months ago, Some very fair re turns of wheat were obtained from fallowed ground and yields of from tin eo to live bags to the acre were common. From crops other than fallow, the returns were very small, very few exceeding one and a half bags to the acre. Tho average for crops harvested in this district would probably work out at fcetwpen gva an(J sir. to the aore, there were hundreds of acres never harvested. The best returns were ob tained from clay ground, the light sand and anything with loose surface failed badly. The sample is excellent and fairly free from foreign matter.
