A story is told of two bootnmakers whose shops faced each othllcr fronm opposite sides of the streets, and whio carried 'n a keen competition, advertising in their windows all the newest fashions of boots and shoes. One of them had a son at college, who provided his father with the motto - " Slens conscia recti " (a mind conscious of rectitude), which was immediately displayed in the window.
