LECTURE AT THE MECHANICS' INSTITUTE. On Thursday evening, Mr. J. H. Thompson, M.A. delivered a lecture upon ' Some of the Consequences of Neglected Mental Culture 'to a tole rably fair audience. Mr. Chivers in the chair. Hfe commenced by point ing out that man differed from the lower! animals in being 'possessed of philosophical' cariosity or , a\ desire to inquire, into, causes, and that, such in quiry distinguished humanity from brutality, and that the study of the mind transcended every other wisdom. Referring to the Delphic axiom 'Read thyself,' ho said, it should be inscribed in every mind, for only by reading one's self could we be able to read others, each one believed that his suf ferings were special and peculiar to himself, and so in other matters, and hence the fact of our being aware of other people's shortcomings and ob livious of our own, and without going into the question of what the mind was or was not, he would only wish his hearers to follow him through a few rema...
