Correspondence. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 18 August 1877

Correspondence. IFe wish it to be distinctly understood that ?tee do not in any way identify ourselves with -??? the ojihiiotis expressed by our correspondents. (To the Editor of the Grenfell Record.) Sir,— -Having occasion to go into Grenfell tho other day, arid seeing how little was doing, J. i thought what a 'pity it was that some of the many idle people, who seem lost for want of something to do, did not form a party, and set to work prospecting, the neighbouring country for some of the gold which is quietly sleeping in the-; lap of mother earth. Everyone seems to' say there is plenty of gold to be had if people would sink deep enough for it. I believe that there is abundance of payable gold to be found on or near the surface. The one great drawback is the want of water, but even this could be supplied if only apayable field were opened. If I were a storekeeper, and had a nnmber of unemployed about me, I should put a spade and pick into their hands, and say, ' Take a holiday, la...

HOW TO CATCH A FLEE. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 25 August 1877

HOW TO CATCH A FLEE. ' ' How to catch a flea (says the San Francisco News Letter), is an art that the majority of the human race has studied with, unfor tunately, but little success. It is no use setting spring traps for them, nor can any yet discovered barrier be put in their way which they cannot jump over. Entomology divides fleas into two classes : the pulex irri tans, nnd the penetrans, and it is believed that the San Francisco flea is a dir.eet lineal tlpappndnnt. nf n nnion between the two species, the result of which has been to pro duce an insect with a beak like a pelican and a capacity for nourishment greater than that of the cotyloid wnrm, known' to science1 as a Sanguisnga, and to the world as large as a leech. Any information there fore, that can be given .aB to the pure and certain method of catching a San Francisco flea must be a benefit to the community in particular, and to all dwellers' in arenose regions generally.
