The Advertiser. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, TIIUILDAY AND SATURDAY MORNING. Bairnsdale, Saturday, June 10, 1882. WE regret too lear, 'through the me dium of the Bega Standard, that only a very coiiditional promiso has been given by the Newý South ,VWales Government for the construction of the telegraph line to Delegate. The wires, it is true, are to'be extended to that toirn, but if dur ing the course of the first year the busi ness transacted does not prove to.' be -emunerative the office is to be closed. We trust that tlneMinistry of the sister colony will not carry such a narrow ninded policy into effect, for it is well known that a telegriphic business is not .uddenly. established, but must be gra dually built up. It is affirmed that the V'ictorian Givernimentiare willing to neet the New South Wales Government n establishini thie duolicate teleorrash line with Sydney, knowing full well the importance of such, a step ;. and there fore it is highly, desirable that the Ministry of the...

OUR ILLUSTRATION. LIEUT.-COLONEL T. BRUCE HUTTON, ACTING.COMMANDANT OF LOCAL FORCES, VICTORIA. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 13 June 1882

OUR ILLUSTRATION. LIEUT..COLONEL T. BRUCE HUTTON, ACTING.COMMANDANT OF LOCAL FORCES, VICTORIA. Colonel Hutton comes from a family of soldiers, and he has a kinsman resident in Victoria of the same name, and holding the same rank as his own. The father of the commandant was the late Captain Hutton, an officer in the Bengal army-those Sepoys whom so many a British general, from Clivo and Wellington down to Gough, Napier and IRoberts, has led to victory-nod he was born in the East Indies in 1831. He was sent to Europe for his education, and attended lectures at the University of Edinburgh. Colonel Hutton did not enter the army until later in life than most young soldiers make their debut. It was in January, 1855, during the period when the British army was be having so nobly and suffering so frightfully in the trenches before Sebastapool, that the commandant of our local forces was gazetted to an Ensigncy in the 21st Royal Fusileers. With this distinguished corps, whose feats are chron...

EDITORS. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 13 June 1882

EDITORS. The editor, children, is a member of that race called mankind. -IHe is invariably a kind man. He is perfectly harmless. You may go into his den without fear. But he has his pecu liarities. Thie sight of a poet makes him wild. He is then very dangerous, and is apt to do bodily harm to all within reach. He is also much wrought upon when a man comes in with a trifle Ihe has just dashed off. There is one thing must be said in tire editor's dispraise. His mind is so biassed by long thinking in a certain direction that he dislikes very much to look upon both sides of a question. Therefore, if you value your safety, never ap proach him with manuscript written on both sides of your paper. The editor generally writes with a pen, but his most cutting articles are the product ofrhis shears. And let me say right here, children, that a good deal of sheter nonsense has been printed about the editor. He uses his shears only when composing an entirely original article. An editor would make...

THE MERMAIDS. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 13 June 1882

THE MERIAIDS. "Takin' in stores, we was, here and there, an' was pretty near prowisioned in full; the last place we put into was Grenada for sugar an' rum. Didn't go into the bay, but an chored in the roadstead outside St. Georne's. The casks o' rum came off in a lighter, an we was hoisting 'em in as fast as we could, for it was close on sunset an' no twilight there, an' we was to sail the same night, as the wind was fair. My mate, Josh Stevens, was down in the lighter, helping the nlggers to sling the casks. It was just ldark as he got the last one in the sling, but somehow it slipped as we hoisted it over tle gunwale of the boeat and fell into the sea with a splash. Spirit-caskswas different things in them days to what it is now-bound with thick iron an' built of hard-wood staves as heavy as iron, so down goes this 'ere cask to the bot tom like a twenty-four pun' shot. If it had beon daylight, no doubt you might ha' seen it lyln' there, for the water off Grenada's as clear as crys...

REVIEW. "THE STORY OF A SIN." [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 13 June 1882

REVIEW. "THE STORY OF A SIN." We have received from Mr. George Robert. son an Australian edition of a now work by tolen Mathors, author of "Comin' Thro' the Rye." The Story of a Sin is a powerfully written sketch, full of exciting incidents, and in which the interest never flags for an instant. Tlier is not a dull page in the whole book. The plot is boldly conceived, and carefully schemed throughout, carrying on the reader's absorbed attention until the threads :are all gathered up, and the climax reached in a masterly and thrilling denou. mtlt. The characters are drawn in Miss Moathers' usual lifoelike style and carefully delineated, and present a striking and vivid contrast of coloring. Take Mr. Eyro, the story of whose sin and its consequences form the ground. work of the tale-" Haughty, brilliant, with dark peculiar beauty, as coveted by men as it was dangerous to women ;" and the do. scendant of a race who " for the last hundred years lhad been an enigma to the world, and perha...

The Advertiser. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY MORNING. Bairnsdale, Tuesday, June 13, 1882. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 13 June 1882

The Advertiser. PUBLISHIED EVERY TUESDAY, TIIHUSDAY AND SATURDAY MORNING. Bairnadale, Tuesday, June 13. 1882. WHILE the reports respecting the snag ging operations at present being carried on in the Tambo River are very satis factory, the greatest complaints are made relative to the logs which are removed from the river being allowed to remain l~ ing on the banks of the stream. It is as serted that, unless the timber be burnt off or removed, the expense at present being incurred will be rendered compara tively useless, for the first flood which conies down will swoop the logs back again into the stream, and once more the Tambo River will require the services of the snagging party. Apart from the large amount at present ieing expended to clear the channel of the 'lamb alnd render it navigable, it is of the utmost imuportancn, t the r«sidents on the river that the work should bo cumplietd as quickly as possible, and therefore it will t be very galling to them to find that in consequen...
