The large sum of ^49? had been paid away and there was a credit balance of £252, Since August, 1904, to July 1914, the Society had paid away 595. The employes de sired to thank Mr H.* V. McKay for still ifllowiiig; the sum of .£250 free of interest at the disposal oft the committee for the purpose of' granting small loans to employes who migh fall into financial diffi culties. Since the initiation of this fund by Mr McKay, ,£S24 has been loaned toe ployes. The distress fund now in existence at thewor ks had demonstrated what good could be done for sh pmates or depend ents by employes contributi g and Id per week, and these small amounts had accumulated to £l93 in the last twelve months. PATRIOTIC CONCERT AT FOOTSCRAY A. patriotic entertainment will be held at the Trocadero Theatre on Thursday, September 3, iti aid of the Lord Mayor's Patriotic Fuud. In addition to the theatre entertainment, Miss M'Sweeney and Messrs J. Hill and M. H. M'Dougnll have gratuitously offer hd their services for the occasion. Mr Robert Johnstone has specially written a patriotic song, which will be sung by Mr Hill. Full par ticulars will be found advertised. The Mayor suggested at Mon day's Council meeting that a per cent levy should be struck on all wages, in aid of the fund to re lieve distress that would be likely to occur through the war. YARRAVILLE PATRIOTISM PATRIOTIC CONCERT A GREAT SUCCESS The patriotic concert held in the Yatraville Hall on Wednesday evening last proved a success from every standpoint. It was held un der the auspices of the Yarraville Citizens' Brass Band and the Yar raville Progress Association, and the proceeds are to be devoted to the Lord Mavor's appeal for the wives, children and parents of our 20,000 soldiers. The residents of the district responded well to the call, and the hall was packed to the doors some time before 8 o'clock. The large audience were in a fine patriotic spirit, and they joined heartily in the singing of ' i<ule Britannia1' and "God Save the King-" The concert proved to be above mediocre, and the pro gramme was of a varied character. The stage presented an attractive appearance, being decorated with Union Jacks, kindly lent for the occasion by Messrs R. Borthwick and D. Robertson and Yarraville Citizens' Club. WAR NEWS and PICTURES BRITAIN'S! ROYAL YACHT. UNITED CHURCH SERVICE A special united Patriotic Church Service will be held in St. George's Picture Theatre on Sunday, Sep tember 6, at 8 p.m., after the or dinary church services. All the Churches in Yarraville are uniting and a big choir will lead the sing ing and also render an anthem. Special hymns will be sung and all the Ministers will be_ taking some part. Addresses will be given bv the Rev W. R. Byers and Rev. W. O. Ward, and the Rev \V. T. Roach will preside. Admission will be by ticket which can be had from the various Ministers and Mr J. M'Farlane. RESIDENT OF VARRAVILLE < FOR 57 YEARS i —— :o: Mr William A. Stone, of 197 Hyde street. Yarraville, who has been a resident of Yarraville for 57 years, was 82 years of age on Monday week, and the birthday was celebrated in the Masonic hall Yarraville, on last night week, when about 100 relatives and friends were present. Mr Stone has 7 sons and 2 daughters, 50 grandchildren, and 44 great grand children, totalling in all 103 living descendants. Mr Stone is hale and hearty, and the wish was ex pressed during the evening that he would live to celebrate many more birthdays. Mr Geo McDonald proposed the health of Mr Stone, and in response the old gentleman said he hoped they would meet many a time again, and concluded by wishing prosperity to them all.. No Half-Holiday for Employe On Thursday, at the Footscray Court, Robert Invvood, fruiterer, of Barkly Street, was charged with having faileu to grant a half-holi day to Emily Boston, an employe, ff»r week ending June 27. "Mir Freeman," who prosecuted, said that when the lady inspector. called on defendant in response to a complaint made by the girl, de fendant's wife said she was not go ing to have all this trouble, and the girl had been dismissed. FOOTSCRAY THISTLE CLUB The Footscray Scottish Thistle Club held another of their enjoy able concerts on Wednesday, 19th August, in the Royal Hall, Foot scray. The program was opened in a patriotic manner, by all the artists, committee and audience singing' "Rule Britannia," and ''God Save the King," with a dis play ol national flags held by young Australian soldiers and sail ors. After the assembly had bsen sounded by a bugler, the singing began led off by Mr and Mrs Gre gor Wood, and was joined in by the audience in a very hearty man ner.
