Our Wool Report. THURSDAY, NOON, June 11th, 1896. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 12 June 1896

Our Wool Report. Thursday, Noon, June 11th, 1896. No auction sales have taken place during the week, and it is expected that the fortnightly sales originally fixed for Wednesday and Thursday, the 17th and 18th instant, will be postponed until the first week in July, owing to the small quantity of wool available for cataloguing. If this is the case, as regards auction sales last week's are the last for the statistical year, which ends on the 30th instant. There is still a good enquiry, but as very little wool is on offer, transactions are not large, und consist of the passed in lots last week and locally scoured parcels. As the sales on Thursday last were not completed up to the time of our going to press, sve were unable to publish the quantities dis posed of on that day by each broker, which we now give : — si! I! Gossip. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 12 June 1896

Gossip. Said a man to his neighbor one day, ?c Why do you call your horse ' Light ning 1 ' ' The neighbor replied, ' Be cause he goes so slow, of course.' You never can tell exactly what people mean when they say a thing like that, but language is a queer thing, anyway. Do you remember that yarn about a man writing to a newspaper editor to ask him the etiquette of the sidewalk 1 The editor replied, ' When a lady and gentleman are walking together, the lady should go inside of the gentleman.' Exactly. But that wasn't what the editor meant. Perhaps it is true, as the witty Frenchman said — that Language was given to us to conceal our thoughts with. What set me on on that tack about language was the subject I sat down to have a gossip about, i.e, a 'Portuguese man-o'-war.' If you stand on the deck of a yacht in a calm sea or sit on a rock beside the deep waters and watch the lovely Physaha moving about, you'll wonder why they were ever called ' Portuguese men-o'-war.' But if you are in...

Ensilage and Spaying. TO THE EDITOR "S.S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 12 June 1896

Ensilage and Spaying. TO THE EDITOR ' S.S. AND S. JOURNAL.' fcra, — As the dairying industry is now of so much importance in Aus tralia, any information gained by practical experience upon the subject will be read with interest by the many readers of your excellent little journal. I am sure that, as a rule, our dairy men do not make half the provision for feeding their cows that they should. I was much struck by a letter in your journal of 22nd ult. over the signature of 'Argyle McCallum,' and I thought what a capital hint for lucerne growers near the coast, where so many beautiful crops are spoiled by wet when cut for hay. Why not make it into ensilage, instead of trying to always make hay, and also utilise surplus grass, as does Mr. McCallum? I feel sure more variety in fodder should be grown, such as root crops, which come in for water feed. I have found that the common pie melon is excellent feed for milch cows, those fed with them giving splendid cream ing milk. I sowed them ab...

Anthrax or Cumberland THE NATURE THEREOF. WRITTEN FOR THE " SYDNEY STOCK AND STATION JOURNAL." IV. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 12 June 1896

Anthrax or Cumberland THE NATURE THEREOF. Written for the ' Sydney Stock and Station Journal.' (By The Globb Trotter.) IV. A Scotchman once said to his neighbor, ' Hey, sauney, is a bumble bee a beast or a bird 1 ' ' Hoots,' said the other, ' nane o' your theolo gical questions ; you're spoilin' my drain ; here's tae ye.' If you come to ask the nature of anthrax you will strike a snag of that kind, because it's not what you would expect it to ANTHRAX HEART BLOOD OF GUINEA PIG. be. Jf you say that the germ of anthrax is a vegetable you get mixed, because we think of vegetables as cabbages, potatoes and things like that. There was once a north country pilot sent ashore from a scurvy smitten ship to buy some vegetables and he brought back a barrel of split peas. When the captain swore at him, and asked him if ho called them vegetables, he said, ' I never heerd them ca'd nowt el&e.'
