FOOTBALL. St. Kilda v. South Melbourne. [Newspaper Article] — Malvern Standard — 22 June 1907

FOOTBALL. I St. Kilda v. South Melbourne. St. Kilda has met its Waterloo but what a scramble it was ? Let us, however, begin at the beginning. The match was the chief topic of conversation amongst footballers all the week, and all the world and bis wife were expected to be present. It was a sight to look round the ring just before proceedings commenced. It is doubtful whether ever before a larger crowd was on the ground, and the eager anxious throng expected to see a fine exposition of the game. To give tone to the assemblage, the Lieut. Governor, several members of Parliament and other notabilities were present, but all the same it was one of the worst exhibitions of foot ball seen at a League match this season. Six cr seven free kicks against South for infringements ia almost as many minutes at the start were given. The numbsr of men on the ball quite pre vented anything like free and open play, and it is wonderful the Saints* captain could not see that the cramped and struggling ...

Prahran v. North Melbourne. In i he pre sence of a small atten dance ai the North Melbourne ct ii kr t ground, on Saturday last, Prahran eneaged the local team in hat lc for ilie first time this season, and alter a scrambling game for 3 quarters, finished up victors by 24 points. At half time, and even three quarrer time, not even their most sanguine supporters felt sure of a win, as at half time North Mel bourne led by 14 points, and with the wind against Prahran in the last quarter, they being oniy 8 points in Hie lead, it was none too safe-looking, but they finished in tip top style, the test nniah they have put up this season, and adding 2 goals 4 behinds, they won, North not having put on a single point after half time, in fact only once or twice did the ball pass the centre line in the two quarters. FOOTBALL. St. Kilda ft Carlton. YYhaiitr Saints had not recovered from tlie previous Saturday's match, or wvre a lons way behind form, the fact rtmains that the bet ter team won on Saturday last. There was another great crowd, and «hihi tlie game was quite free iroin any objectionable features, yet in the ruck, in quickly handling the b di, in pas-ing one to the other, and ia kicking, i he Cai Hon team were a Icn^ way superior. Kicking against the wind in the first quarter, the visitors finished up nine p; mts to the gocd, and at half time they w^rc 27 points ahead. Thc home team's shooting for goal wis cut gord. On the play so far there did not appear to be any doubt but that Saints were in for a second defeat, and subsequent play justified the belief. The tricolors played best at th:; finish of the last quarter, when il was altogether too late to make up the ground lost. Seveiai of the Saints have a habit of ho'ding on the hall too losg, instead of kicking, and this was specially ...

Municipal Matters. [Contributed.] [Newspaper Article] — Malvern Standard — 29 June 1907

Municipal Matters. [Contributed.] In this community there is an unmistakable indifference in national and municipal affairs, but it was on the latter point that Mr Mackinnon, M.L.A., very recently laid considera ble emphasis. He said he wished to put the blame on the shoulders of the people for the lack of appreciation of the real value of municipal govern ment. Mr Mackinnon rather enthu siastically referred, on the other hand, to the large number of English men, who in the London County Council, and other bodies, devote their energies to bettering the con ditions of the masses. In numerous instances these gentlemen have inde pendent means, and at 'the same time a large amount of civic patriotism.. In our sparsely populated country there are very many who resemble the Englishmen in the first particular, but who, apparently, do not possess ' the necessary interest to come forward. We must go to Germany for ideas how to induce this class to exert itself more than ever, not only in m^n...
