Local. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press — 29 September 1870

We regret this week to have to announce the sudden death of Frank Lane Bindley, surgeon, an old resident of Kilmore, and who was for many years hela in the highest es' teem by our townsmen, which sad event took place at his late residence during the night of Sunday last or early on Monday morning. On Monday last an inquest was held on the remains before A. P. Akehurst, Esq., coroner. The evidence of Timothy M'Carthy, who was a servant to deceased, was to the effect that on Saturday deceased, who had been generally confined to his bed and drinking lately, was worse; he got up, but did not go out of the house. On Sunday deceased told witness he was bad, and said if he did not get up he would shortly die. About ten o'clock on Sunday night witness went into the bedroom of deceased, and noticed that he looked black in the face, but said nothing of it to Dr Brook who was in the next room. Witness thought Dr Bindley was asleep. About six o'clock next morning witness went into Dr Bindley's ...

MINING. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press — 29 September 1870

MINING. Our mining resources are still retarded by the untoward weather. Jupiter Plavius commands this situation, and mining enter, prise is in abeyance. At the Goldie Com. pany's claim a new lode has been opened up, and a large body of payable quartz d;sclosed. A mining investor from the Woods' Point district has purchased an interest, and we hear that some of the shareholders are now in Melbourne for the purpose of procuring the necessary battery. When this is erected immediate returns can be calculated upon. A second claim has been taken up, and in the course of a few weekswe look for considerable activity in the Goldie locality. Reedy Creek has not yet recovered from the prostration caused by the Tonstall disappointment. Various rumours are afloat as to the future of the Tonstall Company, but we are unable to supply any definite information. Many miners are of opinion that the crushing ob tained, although less than expected, was still sufficiently encouraging to prevent a total ...

THE PRUSSIAN GENERALS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press — 6 October 1870

TIE PRU.SSIAN. ; GENE1 ALSi The Prussian army, from its, having so. recently been in a great war, will so far. have an advantage of its rival, and this circum: stance at the same time enables'the. public to form a better judgment as to the capa" bility of its leaders. It is well understood that the strategist of the Prnssiapv war de. }:artment is General MIoltke, and on him therefore will have devolved the planning of t the campaign; This duty will consist in the h selection of the country in which the armies will op?rate and the mods in which they will support each other. As in the war of S1SG, Genaeral Moltke, as far as we gather by the fragmentary telegrams r ceivc dby the last mail, has decided on assuming the of fensive, and endeavoring 'to penetrate the frontier between Metz and 8arrqbourg. leaving Strasbourg on his left flank. As a s'rategist General lMoltke has a great repu, I tation in Germany, and probably he deserves it, but the military critics have been pretty unanimous...

THE PERFIDIES OF MR. C. E. JONES. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press — 6 October 1870

THIE PElUFIDIES OF M51 0. E.. JO NES. The Commonwealth, an organ of the Orange party published at Ballarat, devotes 4,ý,; A i, ",, to nth o* e w.o.u; of Mr C o E. Jones. The following is a special passage o in the hon. gentleman's career. We0 now come to another matter the most c 'paintul of all, which has hitherto been i, cloaked from the public, in the, hope that f Jones would mend his ways as he promised, - and lead a' new life, but which he has not done, but year after year sinks deeper into if the mire. When a candidate in the interest - of the Liberal party was required for Bal :l larat West, we wrote to a friend in Mel t bourne, and the result was that Jones con d sented to stand. ' A requisition was got up a to him, and future proceedings will be found s detailed in the following letter: e " Ulster Hotel, Melbourne, " August 30, 1570. t . I am often blamed for first introi , ducing Jones to the publie; but at that, time e there was nothing against him, and I thought 1 he wou...
