The Western Champion. Vita sine literis mors est. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 14 April 1880

Sire mcstfijir (prcmjwnt. Vita time literu mon at. BLACEAIiL) WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14. THE success which has attended Mr. MCILWCAITH'S negotiations in London for floating the Queensland loan will probably have the effect of redeeming the present Government from a portion of the disgrace which they have incurred since the Premier's departure. When the last session closed the Ministry were in possession of a powerful majority, enabling them to carry all their measures with a high hand. Unfortunately they hare not used their power with prudence, and during the recces the arbitrary man ner in which they have administered the affairs of Government has given great offence not only to the people of the colony, but to many of their own party. Even among themselves there appear to be serious dissensions, and when we find one member of the Cabinet publicly blaming and condemning the action taken by liia colleagues, it looks very much as if confidence were destroyed among those with whom complete ...

COTTAGE HOSPITALS. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 14 April 1880

COTTAGE HOSPITALS. TO THE EDITOR. Sic,-I don't see why BlackaU should be so long without & cottage hospital. For a long time this town has been suffering from this inconvenience. There is really no reason why this inconvenience stould continue. It has been urged that this district was not wealthy enough to contribute the Accessary funds for the support of an institution like that which it is my present object to advo cate. The neighboring stations themselves would give enough to defray almost all (he | cost which would be cutailed by the estab lishment of a hospital for our local sick and suffering. In urging the adoption of some such plea it must not be supposed that I nra desirous of launching out in an extravagant manner, { and endeavoring to vie with the splendid buildings of the older towns. Jty no means. In this as in other local matters, while desirous of seeing BlackoU possessed of crcry social means of advancement, I would still counsel moderation and prudence. What...

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. April 2. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 14 April 1880

BRISBANE AFFAIBS. FBOM OD& SPECIAL CQEEESPOXDEXT. April 2. We arc being enlivened by an election-at least the eJeetion is right enough, though there may be some doubt about the enliven ment. Angus Mackay having shaken the dust of Queensland from his feet, the elec torate is being contested. Two of the candi dates, Hockings and Fraser, are old hands, and staunch Libs. It is amusing to note the extreme regret with which they find them selves compelled to oppose one another. It ie quite heartrending, you know, but each Iiad promised so many friends to come forward that he could not draw back. Both are respectable fogies, Hockings rather the more 60 of the two, for he never seems to be visited by an original idea. And they are Quecn street of the purest breed. But Dr. Prentice is the joke. This worthy bat eccentric medico lias a erase to enter Parliament. He has been blighted on previous occasions, but has cot lost heart. This time he comes out on the Protectionist platfonn, and...
