IN ENGLISH DOMESTIC STYLE [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 1 October 1930

IN ENGLISH DOMESTIC STYLE This is a most attractive design for a nine-ro omul house and all conveniences.' It is of an English country variety— a type likely to remain popular with most people long after many other domestic styles have waned in favour. The perspective shows an-xxterior with almost ' unlimited possibilities for unusual and happy architectural effects, .and' as it appears to be the author's idea to carry it out in half timber and cement above, the ground floor, with * „ the latter in red brick, the colour contrasts should be all that could be desired. The group ing or tne rooms, is a special reature, anci some 01 the vistas possible, in the interior, with this,, arrangement, should be extremely attractive. The hall could be made very decorative inde...

THE PLANETARIUM A RIVAL TO THE FILMS IN GERMANY Scientific Amusement [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 1 October 1930

THE PLANETARIUM A RIVAL TO THE FILMS IN GERMANY Scientific Amusement ============     Australia is not very conversant with the planetarium. In Germany, however, the kiddies   run to their parents with plaintive demands for threepence (or whatever they use there in the way of money) to 'go and see the stars,' and they do not mean such stars as Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton; this is quite a con- trast with the continual local demands for the 'pitchers.' It is only in Europe, and in Germany, in   particular, that planetaria are to be found,   though recently Chicago has been endowed   with a massive planetarium through the gen- erosity of a magnanimous retired business man, Max Adler, who has recently built an enormous building of this type costing some £100,000   on an island in Lake Michigan. Whether this fact of their being confined to the Continent alone is singular, is hard to say; it may ...

CLEANING BRICKWORK Where the Painter Comes In [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 8 October 1930

— — ? ; ? ♦ ? - CLEANING BRICKWORK Where the Painter Comes In In considering the occasional, renewal of the outside of a wooden, house, or indeed of tlie woodwork in any house, the method of opera tion is simple; but when a brick house is under consideration the painter has a problem to solve which may or may not result in artistic success. A brick wall exposed to a smoky atmosphere will eventually . become shabby, ancl this may be remedied either by washing it clown or by covering up with paint as if it were a wooden wall. A' third method rather- partakes of thc nature of preliminary foresight, as if a bVick wall in its prime were painted with some invisible liquid that closed up the pores, and thus prevented either damp or clir.t from taking a firm grip', not only would ' these two gains be obtained, but the wall itself would be much more easily cleaned down, if it did get dirty. Such a material as 'Yu-r-ite' can, it is claim ed, be put on without changing the appearance of the br...

RED LEAD AS A PAINT Some Limitations to its Use [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 8 October 1930

; RED LEAD AS A PAINT ' Some Limitations to its Use Red lead has a great reputation fgi: certain purposes, such, for example, as protecting iron ' from corrosion. In such applications as painting post office pillar- boxes,. .a mixture of '60 per cent, of red lead with 40 per cent, of Japaiiners' gold size, is said tp dry in 15 minutes, and when varnished afterwards it is supposed to last indefinitely. But .except in fare ''c&ses, such as' agricultural 'implements, it is seldom used as. an artistic finish, . mainly- because its specific gravity is ? considerably greater than -that of other pigments. « ? Owing to its excessive weight it do.es not remain well'' in suspension, so that it naturally finks to the bottom of the can, leaving the other pigments at the top. Owing to this a difficulty arises in keeping up a uniform tint. Practically red lead is ? mainly, used -when ? its protective value as a paint material over, reaches the' difficulties in working ' it ' when .combine...
