Alexandra Times. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY. "Veritas Vincit Omnia." FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 1869. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 25 June 1869

PUnLIST.ED EVEIIRY TURRDAY AND YRIDAY. Vertlta VWincis OinnlSa. FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 1869. TIlE prospects of the U. T. Flat Company are for the present blighted, After three weeks of hard work haling, the contractor subduing the water, and as success was about to crown his labors, the rain fell in :orrents, and completely swamped the opera. tions. This is a serious disappointment to the people of Alexandra, who had fixed thoirhopes of future prosperity on the find ing of a deep lead of gold on the U. T. Flat. There are a number of individuals in our township who are now loud in saying that they felt sure the contractor would never succeed, as he knew nothing about the work. In justice to the contractor, Mr Watt, we have much pleasure in bearing testimony to the perseverance with which he carried on the work night and day, and that lihe used every effort within his power to complete the contract. Where lie failed was in the want of sufficient capital, and the difficulty experienced in ge...

GODFREY'S CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 25 June 1869

'GODFREY'S CRKE K. -4-~-- The population of Godfrey's Creek is increasing rapidly. The stores and hotels keep pace with the population, or rather as is usually the case, keep in advance of it. Every other day produces some new hotel or store. The old bark shanties are becom ing things of the past, and as fiast as sawn timber can be supplied new fronts are being erected. Since the streets have been laid out by the surveyor the p:ace is assuming shape and form. Some parties are trying a little sharpness by attempting to hold several building allotments by placing two or three sheets of bark on the ground. This will hardly protect the ground against any person who will build and reside thereon. The water now flows along the flat like a large river, and for some time at least it will be impossible to commence any new shafts especially on the lower ground. The late rains should convince every one. of the necessity of puddling and slabbing their shafts from top to bottom with-good sawn ti...

* (To the Editor of the Alexandra Times) Sxa',-lThere is something wrong about the management of the U. T. Flat Company. TheyJ.qt contrtlrols to- -one man alter another because they,'are the lowest tendorers, with ot~oonsideriilg whether the parties are cap -t?ile+oficarrying oau-t-orkc-. -f trhe com pony werethe only losers by this system of doing business then no one would have any reason to complain beyond the shareholders, B3ut I, as a working man, have reason to grumble. I took I job at the shaft and sup . posed that my wages would be all right as the company was a good one, but after work ing hard for two weeks-wet all the time nearly-I find that I can get no wages. I blame the cdmpany for this as they ought to see that any person taking a contract from them has the means of paying his men. I got a little money from the manager, Mr Downing, and if it had not been for that I would have sropped at the first week. I know that I have no remedy except cueing the contractor. Had the...

_ narreawnhenre. (7b the Editor of the Al.candra 7'in04) 'liftZ- our remarks in last issue, on the school at Godfrey's Creek, being calculated to mislead your readers, allow me therefore" to say a few words bearing on the Common Schools Act, In the first place, Mr Stevens as master of a common school could not have been connected with any religious denomina tion in particular. Secondly, Mr Stevens had no authority whatever to hand over his school to Mr Sheehy. The power of nominating the teacher is vested in. the local committee, but his appointment must be sanctioned and his qualifications approved of by the Board of Education, consequchtly the committee at Godfrey's would be unworthy of their high office were they to quietly acquiesce in such an act o'jobbery without at least ascertaining whether Mr Sheehy possesses a certificate of competency, and is in other respects qualified to perform his important duties. In reference to the remarks of your correspondent " Pater familias," I...

PUBISfIr.D EYVEIRY TUPPnDAY AND IRIDAY. " Verlt&t4 Vincit Olnl£la." FRIDAY, JULY 2, 1869. T're days of jumping are numbered. We allude of course to dishonest jumping. The i-men who have been h? ,a on the indus. .try of others will now find that their occu pation, like that of Othello's, is gone. The Beechwor'h Mining Board has at length produced one bye-law that gives some pro tection against loafing jumpers, who go prowling about on all goldfields like hungry dogs, trying wlirat they can pick up or steal. The jumper goes about like a midnight thief looking for unguarded doors and win dows, tnat he may creep in by some unpro tected nook or corner. Clause 4 of the new Bye-hw No. 44, will catch some of the jumpers, and prevent them being so trouble some : 4 When any mining tenement shall be adjudged forfeited, the person on whose com plaint such forfeiture shall have been adjudged a' all be entitled to obtain possession of the same,'provided he shall, as a condition prece dent...

(To the Editor of V7i inmes.) ir--In your last issue I find some edi. torial remarks, stating that, " We are not aware of any impediments to selection of land in this district under the 42nd Section."
