Steam Communication. [Newspaper Article] — The Inquirer & Commercial News — 19 March 1856

Steam Communication. We are extremely glad to observe that the subject of steam communication is again seriously engaging the attention of the Victoria Government and press. It is now proposed to establish a monthly communica tion with the Australian colonies via, Point de Galle or Ceylon, wholly irrespective of aid from the Home Government. The fol lowing remarks upon the subject, taken from the monthly summary of the Melbourne Argus, of the I6th February, prepared for transmission by the steamer Hellespont, will . explain the nature of the proposed plan : — The wdl-knom steamer Hellespont arrived on 'Wednes day from Sydney, en route to Singapore, and will leave this port on Snndav morning, with mails for England. Iiut we exceedingly regret to find that there is no intention on tbepart of the proprietors to establish a regular line. Tie circumstance, however, of a steamer being sent on this route naturally leads us to consider whether there are not means within die polonies for reg...

These is, just at present, in the colony of Western Australia, an enormous, and we fear, characteristic dearth of intelligence. We take the word in its double signification, as well of the raw material of topics for discus sion, as of capacity for cooking it when ob tained ; so that it is positively refreshing in discover one fragment more brilliant than usual, a gem that is not only more conspi cuous than its neighbours, but positively dazzling with its excess of folly. There are three newspapers in the colony : the Government Gazette, Independent Jour nal, and our humble selves. Each has its columns to be filled weekly, and each has to exercise its discretion in the selection and re jection of matters that may be offered for publication. We may fairly assume, that anything emanating from a government functionary would have a right to a place i...
