Jl Passing Era . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 29 January 1902

Jl Passing Era . BWEXTY years ago the proposition How to obtain good land at low prices was of comparatively easy solution . Then a little courage , j \ ist enough to break away from old ties and associations and migrate to a new country , was all that was needed . The United States Government was then the owner of millions upon millions of splendid agricultural land , eligibly located , that could be had on government terms , which were most liberal . A farm of 1 ( 30 acres c © uld be had practically free of cost . _ But conditions have changed ; government free land is practically exhausted . True , reports show large areas of government lands still open to settlement , but their character and location are such as to afford very little attraction to the settler . Today people are wondering why they did not avail themselves of the liberal terms offered by the government and secure a farm . Twenty , yes , ten years from now these same people and many others like them will be equally...

Future Hog Prices . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 29 January 1902

Future Hog Prices . finiTII so many producers of hogs asking \ g \ g \ how soon hogs will sell over $ 7 , and some figuring that $ 8 may not be high later on it seems a little unpopular to take the stand that HIGH PRICES FOR 1902 HAVE BEEN SEEN . The Live Stock World would not pose as a prophet . Its first business is to correctly chronicle commercial values of live stock , hut it is better to say the true thing than the popular thing . Hogs may sell as high as many people Expect them to sell , but from present indications we are strongly inclined to think that those who are counting upon 7 and 8 c hogs this year are in danger of fooling themselves . In many places there are no fat hogs , and in some pretty good hog sections even young shoats are very scarce , but it is a very large country , and there has not been such a pork-making winter for a long time . There has been practically no loss from sickness . The big marketing of pigs was mainly because the pigs were plenty . If they...

Corn Will IBe Corn , [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 29 January 1902

Corn Will IBe Corn , ¦ flEN whose opinion is of value never l ^ ll again expect to see corn used for fuel . This judgment is based on reasoning of the soundest kind . Not only is the export demand for corn growing rapidly , but modern methods of manufacturing cereal foods have caused a heavy consumption of the grain by our home population . One cereal factory at Decatur , 111 ., consumes all the white corn raised within a radius of fif ty miles of that city . Glucose mills are also heavy consumers of corn and distillery needs are increasing annually . The United States is a beef and pork eating conntry and corn must for all time to come be the prinoipal food in pro * ducing cattle and hogs . Improved methods of cultivation will doubtless increase tho yield Of the monarch of cereals , but the man who ventures the assertion that the day of cheap corn is past has his wits about him . 1 o The old adage about one s being able to catch more flies with molasses than with vinegar is certain...

Practical Work at The Iowa Short Course . Daii . v LIVE STOCK WOIU . P S SPECIAL SUUVU-E . Ghost of a Knight on ' change . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 29 January 1902

Ghost of a Knight on change . [ From the Ban Francisco Bui letU ] I wandered up the street of this modern town marveling greatly at the strauge sights I saw . Nothing seemed familiar , and a great feeling of loneliness oame over me . Of a truth , I was a stranger to all this . Suddenly as I passed a great house mine ears were assailed by a great tumult arising from within . Gadzooks ! I cried , this soundeth something like ! Me thinks mine apprehension hath not forgotten the sound of battle ! I will within and perchance happen upon a very pretty encounter ! Whereupon I drew my trusty blade and dashed through the door . It was an awful sight . Men danced up and down and beat the air like demons . Truly , the actions were wondrously like a deadly fray , but wonderful to relate , there were no blows struck ! ••Have at thee ! I thundered , aiming a thrust at a knight of goodly size with his hat upon the back of his head and his neckband hanging by one end . Just then I was confronted by...

In The Whirl Of The Live Stock World . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 29 January 1902

In The Whirl Of The Live Stock World . John Clay Jr . is back from a western trip . He says there are a good many cattle on hand in Colorado that perhaps might better have been marketed at the good prices of last fall . Feed out there is pretty plentiful . At Fort Collins where tliey began asking $ 10 per ton for hay and sold a good deal at $ 7 they are now selling it at about § 4 . 50 . At Bjlle Fourcho , S . D ., where they asked $ 7 for it earlier , it is now selling at $ 4 and a fow weeks more of mild weather would have made it $ 3 . 00 . Reports from Southeastern Iowa aro tbat four Inches of snow have fallen , greatly benefitting crops . Good seed corn In many sections is likely to be worth $ 1 . 25 a bushel . Iowa is overrun witb land hunters from cast of the Mississippi and farms arc changing hands at f 10 to $ 15 higher than a year ago . Stories about the less of cattle will now come singing in over the telegraph wires at so muoh par , from the special correspondents . They ...
