MILLIONS CIRCULATED . — <¦ % •<* • T HERE is a great demand for benator iiiimans speech . Some Senators , having plenty of means , quickly put their speeches in type and not only the mails but the waste-baskets of the land are burdened by From the Greeley Tribune , Colorado , we quote , to show how differently the people feel towards Tillman s speech , as follows : . - . „ ... No sooner was it known that Senator Tillman was un , able to bear the expense pf printing , his great effort than the presses all over the land went to turning it out by the hundred thousand ; more than a million copies , have already been distributed and not less than five million people have carefully read it from beginning to end . They have not read it either , because Mr . Tillman has been rated a crank and-a buffoon and a blatherskiteby all- the corporation organs in the United States ; it has been eagerly and studiously perused because here is a man who was twice elected governor o...

LIVE SPECIMENS WANTED . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

LIVE SPECIMENS WANTED . / ^ vUR readers are aware how much stock raisers are in- ( ) debted to Pasteur for his scientific discoveries ; they have known of the anthrax vaccine and of its practical use in various parts of the country to prevent the disease known as black leg . But there comes to us a letter from Dr . Harold Sorby , manager of the Pasteur Anthrax Vaccine Company , stating that he is beginning a series of experiments with a virus prepared at the Pasteur Institute for the purpose of exterminating rats , mice , moles and other rodents . . . Dr , Sorby further states , that he desires to ascertain , by suitable experiments , whether the virus is applicable to the various species of gophers and prairie dogs or squirrels found in the different States and which , in some places , are veritable pests . He proposes , therefore , that the readers of the Western Rural send to him live specimens of these pests . As to manner of sending , and all the business arrangements , he woul...

DEAL WITH WELL-KNOWN ! FIRMS . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

DEAL WITH WELL-KNOWN ! FIRMS . THERE are many alleged commission firms in this city who are like the man Reese , arrested the other day on the charge of obtaining goods by false pretenses . It is charged Reese , through his agents , has obtained butter , eggs , and other produce , sold the goods here or in the East , and failed to make a return to the consignor , M . Major , of Austin , Minn . An agent for Reese purchased seventy cases of eggs from Major , offering to pay 11 cents a dozen , making the consignment $ 231 . They were shipped to Chicago , and Major drew a sight draft for the amount on Reese , and sent it to the Haymarket Produce Bank , one of Reese s references , for , collection . The bank notified Major that Reese & Co . had no account with it C . F . Wenham , No . 48 Adams street , was deputized to collect the account for Major or prosecute the firm . After failing to get satisfaction , he placed the matter with the police . A bookkeeper for the firm told...

ANOTHER BLUNDER OF MORTON . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

ANOTHER BLUNDER OF MORTON . THE Farmers FriendX ?) Secretary Morton , is doing his best to carry out his own fool notions , in spite of the action of Congress . As yet no seeds have been purchased for distribution during the coming year . No attempt has been made to prepare for the selection of valuable new varieties , and no seed room has been established nor any corps of clerks and seed-packers trained for the work . The turnip-headed Secretary has given out the information that if he is compelled to send out seeds he will turn the job over to some of the big seedsmen . Thus , instead of being a real benefit to the farmers of the country , it will simply be a plum for the seedsmen , who will thus have an excellent chance to get rid of all their old back-number seeds . Happily the reign of Morton is approaching its close . Another matter of the gravest importance to the farmers of the West has been botched in the usual disgusting manner by that hopeless incompetent . This is the ir...

Woman and Her Domain SHE HATH DONE WHAT SHE COULD . By , Katie Didd . Let me turn my thoughts to the scriptures tonight , For I am weary and looking for rest . I have labored all day and I cannot seeThough I tried to give the Lord my beat—The grand results I had thought to see , When I laid my plans for the work of today ; But Ill leave it all with the Lord and trust . . That he will not spurn it away . What comforting words : She hath done what she could ; I find thein here as I read tonight , I knew it would rest me my Bible to read ; I , always find it the way to the light , I never have turned from it empty away , Nor lacked for a crumb when I sought for lt here—A crumb that would feed my hungering soul , And would tell me that I had a Savior near . And I am sure that my work today Will not be lost , though it seems to be , If I can but hear , She hath done what she could , From my Savior s lips when he reckons with • me . O , Father , I pray thee to help me to know The work tha...

SUPERIOR WOMEN . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

SUPERIOR WOMEN . OF course we have a hobby and why should we not have one . Almost every .. person whom we know possesses , one ( although some are loth to admit the fact ) and are always trotting them out for us to see and admire . Now , this is not my pet hobby , but as I have been asked recently to give a definition of what I think constitutes a superior woman , I will try to picture her to you . My ideal woman is not one of those su-perior-minded women who go about seeking to do their duty by showing other people where they are remiss , by giving their advice to every one , whether asked for or not , and who are far too good and pure to come in contact with sin or suffering . Then there is the superior woman whom we often meet , but who passes us by with head elevated , and an expression of Pm-just-a-little-better-than-you , and we almost regret that she is one of our nearest neighbors . Then some women have a special mission and neglect all other duties near at hand in always l...

DEATH ON SNAILS . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

DEATH ON SNAILS . W HEN we first moved to that house we little knew what awaited us ; but one . day hearing wild outcries from the children in the back yard I hastened there to hear my three-year-old declare , A hnake , a hnake , ( he lisps through his nose and meant to say snake . ) while the wise six-year-old danced around yelling See the whale , O mamma , see , the big whaW No—a hnake , and Taint either , it s a whale . Hush Katydids , I commanded . Shall we kill it ? I reflected for a few moments ; so far as I . knew snails had more demerit than credit marks , for they destroy vegetables ; but I had not endured any personal injuries and was calm . We might fatten snails to sell , some people import them for table use , said I mischievously to Betsy who had followed to the scene and who shuddered and turned sick over my proposition . All she could say for days and weeks afto-. this was O , ugh ! for there were swarms of them on the board walk , stones and ground . I know what I w...

HOUSEHOLD LINEN . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

HOUSEHOLD LINEN . THE good bargains in household linensand domestic goods which are now being put upon the counters for early spring trade , should not be overlooked by the careful housewife . Table linen was never so low-priced very nice qualities of bleached damask , being sold for 75 cents and upwards . For 50 cents one can buy a nice , firm , unbleached damask , which for every day service cannot be equalled . If one objects to the linen tint it can easily be whitened by first washing in a hot suds of Gold Dust , then boiling fpr a few minutes ; after rinsing in clear water hang out over night in the frosty air . In the morning dip again in cold water , squeeze a trifle , and hang out again , dripping . Repeat for several days and yourlinen will be creamy white . Napkins are shown in dainty patterns , some real bargains being seen in the smaller sizes and fringed ones . Fringed table-cloths with napkin s to match come in large variety ; yellow borders seem to be quite a favorite...

rt VALUABLE RECIPES . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

rt VALUABLE RECIPES . To make a substitute for putty : —Soak newspapers in a paste made by boiling a pound of flour in three quarts of water , and add a teaspoonful of alum . When done the mixture should be about the consistency of putty . It may be used to stop cracks in woodwork , and is best applied with a caseknife . It hardens like paper mache and may be stained to match the surroundings , when it will be hardly perceptible ; To render charred documents readible : —This restoration of legibility is effected by pouring collodion over the charred paper . In a short time it dries , forming a tough transparent coating , through which the printing can be seen . Also an application of a weak solution of hydrochloric acid , made with a camel s hair brush will restore print . Tincture of gall produces the same effect upon manuscript . . . ¦ _ How to use court plaster : —If slight wound entirely covered with court plaster will take no harm ; . but a deep cut , if excluded from the ah * ...

DRESS PRETTILY AT HOME . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

DRESS PRETTILY AT HOME . A prettily dressed woman -about the house is a joy and a blessing . There are so many dainty low-priced things for a woman to wear indoors that there is but small excuse when one is shabbily dressed at home . We never have company . No one ever sees me except my -boys and my husband ; argues one wife . Even so , the outside world seeing you is of very small moment . The good opinion of husband and children , who are quite as fastidious as strangers would be , is worth an infinite amount of trouble . So many women say they cannot work when dressed up . No doubt that is very true , simply because the feeling of consciousness of having on a new frock makes them feel stiff and awkward . And yet there are women who will wear the daintiest sort of house gowns , with ? , eve ^ , rent or a soi 1 and stm execute all the little duties the good housewife is expected to do . Anything that washes well and irons easily is suitable for such wear . What is fresher or sweete...
