I ' . m .. &* # » - [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 13 June 1868

I . m .. &* # » - W Tobacco Chewing . I am unfortunately an inveterate tobacco chewer , a pernicious habit contracted at school among my associates at a v * ry early age . That the imr _ 6 derate use of stimulants is injurious to both body and mind is apparent to every person of reason - and reflection . The habit once formed and indulged ln , becomes a second nature , and ls quite difficult to overcome . I feel a lively sympathy for all my friends thus situated , especially for those who wish to abandon the practice and have not a sufficient amount of moral courage to effect that desirable object . I will not at present attempt to offer a plan by which the habit can be entirely broken , for this is not so easily accomplished .. - Let us first consider the actual cost . We generally nse about one plug each week costing about 20 cts ; or 52 plugs at 20 cts , equal to $ 10 . 40 , the sum spent annually for this unnecessary article . If I had time and you had room in your p...

M LBAH HOWARD , B 8 . . As President of the poultry AsS-Clatlon , Ihave often asked the question , which are the best varieties of fowls to keep ? My answer has been , it depends altogether npon what you more particularly want them for , and this must always be kept iii mind in making a selection I will how give briefly the leading characteristics of the various kinds , for the information of intending breeders , leaving them to select accordingly . My remarks will be , as nearly as possible , the result of my own experience . , I will begin with the Cochins , as they generally head the list . They certainly are the largest , if not tbe b % st . THE APIARY [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 13 June 1868

THE APIARY Bees and Frnit Blossoms . A silly prejudice against bees is entertained by some fruit growers ; based on the notion that the crops of fruit are Injuriously affected , both ln quality and quantity , by the visits of bees during the blossoming period . A more unfounded notion , or one deriving less support from observation and science , can scarcely be conceived . Vet it regularly looms up once or twice in a century , and creates as mnch alarm and consternation among the wiseacres as the appearance of a comet used to do in by-gone davs . Repeated instances of the resuscitation of this prejudice are presented in tbe history of bee culture in Germany , especially in the period between 1530 and 1800 . On some of these occasions it was so widely prevalent and so rabid in its demonstrations , as to constrain the almost total abandonment of bee culture in districts where fruit raising bore sway . : To the aid of this came the substitution of cider and beer for the ancient mead or...
