A New Advertiser . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 September 1910
A New Advertiser . At the Wisconsin State Pair in 1907 , with Hon . A . J . Lovejoy as judge , Longfellow s Premier 2 d was awarded Grand Champion honors . A son of Premier Longfellow and Auxvasse Empress 2 d , a daughter of King Premier 2 d , this Champion boar received only his just deserts . A boar of great scale , and a ham that was the admiration of all , an extremely wide back , good feet and legs , he was all that the breeder and farmer could desire . At that time Longfellow s Premier 2 d was owned by Aldoro Farm , and was a member of the great herd that made such an unprecedented show record . It was predicted that Longfellow s Premier 2 d would prove an excellent sire , and when mated with Blue Belle Duchess 3 d , a daughter of Lord Premier , out of Duchess of Willowdale 3 d , also a daughter of Lord Premier , he sired a great litter of pigs that at the Aldoro Farm dispersal sale be came the property of R . A . Bloomfield , Mt . Sterling , 111 . This litter was nicely devel...
Where Handsome Lee Spent His Infancy . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 September 1910
Where Handsome Lee Spent His Infancy . Editor of The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —We notice in your June Issue you speak of Handsome Lee spending his days at Sunnyside , ths home of Lord Lee and the birthplace of Handsome Lee , but the facts in the case are that we purchased Handsome Duchess 2 d , the mother of Handsome Lee , before she farrowed and the pigs were farrowed our property but at Sunnyside , but shipped to Peabody before they were a week old and spent their babyhood days at Peabody Farm and were sold at weaning time to Mr . Corsa . Handsome Lee is no freak . He is great by inheritance as well as individuality and can not help breeding right no matter what kind of sows he is mated with . We recently shipped to Mr . Newton H . Peer at Tacoma , Wash ., the grand young boar Baron Peabody 6 th . In your article you do him an injustice when you speak of him being bad one his hind feet , he is possibly a little weak there but he certainly is so good every ...

One of the most Important of the early fall sales will be held on September 14 th at Blanchard , Iowa , by Mr . Bert E . McMillan . Mr . McMillan will offer some thirtyfive tried brood sows and if they measure up to his usual high standard , we are sure that no breeder will be disappointed if he attends this sale . Mr . McMillan is one of the few men in Iowa who has his ear to the ground , and he certainly is to be encouraged in the way he has been boosting the Berkshire for the past few years in Iowa . This year will mark another mile stone to Berkshire progress in the State of Iowa , and we predict that the men who are there now , on the ground with the right kind of goods to sell , are giong to reap an immense harvest in the next few years . It is only a question of time until the Berkshire will capture tha Northwest and with such men as Mr . McMillan pushing the Berkshire like ne do...

RICE AND HOGS [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 September 1910
RICE AND HOGS ( Beaumont Enterprise . ) The Enterprise has often contended that the Jefferson county farmer does not pay enough attention to the raising of hogs . Especially is this so of the rice farmer . The following from the Matagorda County Tribune would seem to bear out this contention : Berkshires Are Prolific The rice farmers of this county have not begun to appreciate even a fraction of the opportunities which they might enjoy if they would only experiment intelligently with that marvelous grain they grow—rice—and apply its use in all ways promising a profit , is forcibly demonstrated by the experience of a farmer on the Trespalacios during the past year . G . M . Magil gives us the story and he vouches for the facts related . About a year ago Mr . W . J . Powers of Netawaka , Jackson county , Kan ., purchased a farm tract off of the lower end of Moore ranch , and the west side of the Trespalacios . He improved the property and moved on to it at once , and among the first p...
