Shaf-',- er, a hotel man, proprietor of the Lln del hotel at Cherokee, died of pneu " monia. after an illness of three days. 3 $1,000 Damages. A verdict for one thousand dollars damages was given In district court at Abilene to Mrs. J. W. Brown against the Union Pacific railway. Her husband, a cat tleman, fell from a passenger train and was killed. She sued for ten thousand. Cutting Ice at Atchison. The Arm our Packing company. Woods Bros., Swift & Co. and the Yates Ice com pany, all of Kansas City, which own big Ice houses at , Bean and Sugar Lakes near Atchison, began the ice harvest with forces aggregating 700 men. The four concerns will put ub 6,000 tons of Ice daily. Couldn't Face Charges. Albert Gray, a Missouri Pacific engineer, stood in front of an undertaking es tablishment at Fort Scott and shot himself through the heart. Teams are being driven back and forth across the ice on tbe Missouri river at sev eral points the first time since the winter of 1899. New Postoffice, Uncle Sam show ed his partiality to Kansas the other day when he established a postoffice at Corbin City, a brick yard suburb of Cherryvale. Shot Firer Killed. Joe Wright and C. E. Moore, shot flrers, were killed in an explosion at the Devlin-Miller mine, north of Pittsburg. The mine was badly wrecked. Greatest on Record. The slaught er of Kansas cottontails and jack rabbits in the past week has been the greatest on record. People are afraid to eat away from home lest they get rabbit for dinner. While Thawing Engine. A. R. Brown, an employe of the Frisco rail road, was killed in the yards at Fort Scott. He was at work thawing out an engine that had been frozen up during the night, when a passing en gine caught htm, killing him instant ly. P...
