The Gulf of Maine is a geographical wIll 8lviion not marked on average maps, for it is chiefly referred to in scientific treatises on the general subject of the Sari tides, says Collier's Weekly. It is rs formed by the great curve of the Amer Ican coast from Cape Race, the eastern ge extremity of Newfoundland, westward and southward to Cape Cod and Nan tuclhet. Into this curve during normal A conditions of sea and air a current sets Mar perpetually from the far north, known low as the Labrador current. It makes its way eouthward insido the gulf stream T and cools the water, even in summer, orgl as far as Nantucket sound. In the winter months, when northerly winds prevail, a tbriflc sea Is hurled against T those rockbound shores, and when teni rocks are wanting the sands are torn up and shifted, forming islands and new bars here and there, involving the shifting of myrladls of tons in a single ed day, that may ...
