New York, September 9, ISSO. In the index to the volumes of Harper's Monthly one finds among the contributors the name of A. Oakey Hall, late Mayor of New York, who has had, within a few years, any number of vicissitudes. He has always had journalistic and literary tastes, and has bad considerable experience, first and last, on the press. He was for some time editor of the Leader (now dead), a weekly, which attracted no little attention and exercised a certain influence before the overthrow of the Tweed dynasty. He has lately returned to the newspaper ranks, having accepted a position on the staff of tbe Worki. OAKEY HALL'S EBCKHT COURSE Has been singular, even mysterious, and many of his intimate acquaintances are unable to understand it or him. When he was Mayor, and Tweed, Sweeney & Co. were i...

MARGARET AND MAC VAIN*. A month had passed since the trial, and during that period no person but Bertha had seen or conversed with Ranf. It is understood throughout the Silver Isle, although the details of the trial have net been made public, that a grave charge had been brought against the hunchback, of which he had completely cleared himself, and his Judges had been generous enough to declare that in his answer to the charge | Ranf had shown himself in an unexpect edly noble light. The character of these Judges atands so high in the isle that im plicit faith is placed in this declaration, the acceptance of which does much to ; clear away the prejudice which had existed j against Ranf, and many of the islanders ! are anxious to make personal acknowledg- j ment of their error.
