TheSouth Honors Grant. ChicagoNews: The participation^by ex-confederate veterans in the cere^^monies attending the unveiling of the^(irant statue in Lincoln park (Jet. 7th^will he eminently right and fitting. Fromthe breaking out of the civil^war until his death Gen. Grant never^expressed anything but the kindliest^feeling toward the south. He did his^utmost toward making abortive the^secession and succeeded, but he bore^no malice toward his opponents. In^his opinion, frequently expressed, the^south gained more through defeat^than the north through victory. The^seceding states could independently^nrm have rivaled those of the north^and it was for their own salvation^that they were forcibly retained in the^Union. Hundreds and thousands ol^those who are now building up th* !^^^^^south gratefully acknowledge that^Grant w as right and that his triumphs^were also theirs.
