Our hostess coming forward to meet us, ls wrapped in a little ehawl, and remarks that is an awful day; that the hasn't been out, of course, but even in the warm house has felt the cold. In effect, she looks blue and pinched. Whereat we won der, for the room feeti insufficiently hot; but we place ourselves beside her where she sits cowering over the register, and conversation goes on with what spirit i...

AGRICULTURAL; Horace Greeley 'a Agricultural Max ima. The venerable philosopher of the Tribune ia not much of a farmer, but is a elear-headed and far-seeing common sense thinker, as the fol lowing maxims from one of his ad dresses show: L Only good farming pays. He who sows or plants, witbout reason able' assurance of good crope annual ly, might better earn wage of tome capable neighbor than work for so poor a paymaster as he is certain to "prove himself. 2. The g jod farmer is proved by the steady appreciation of his crops. Any one may reap an ample harvest from a fertile virgin eoil; the good farmer alone grows good crops at first, and better ever and afterward. 3. It is lar easier to maintain the productive capacity of a farm than to restore it To exhaust its fecun dity, and then attempt iU restora tion by buying costly commercial fertilizers, is wasteful irrational. 4. The good farmer sells mainly such products as are least exhaus tive. Necessity may constrain him, for the first...
