Silver Mountain, [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 23 June 1860

Silver Mountain, Eastern Tulare June 3d 1860. Editor Delia: —Having just been informed that my last communication for your paper was lost with a package of others which left here about the Ist of last month, I avail myself of the opportunity of dropping you a few lines through our mutual and esteemed friend Dr. George, of your place. I understand from the Dr. that little or nothing is known as yet by your people of the existence of gold, silver, copper, and various other metals in the Eastern portion of Buenavista and Tulare counties. As you are aware, I crossed the Sierra Nevada, through what is known as "Walker's Pass," with a company of men from Butte County about Ist of April, for the purpose of exploring the country east as far as Western New Mexico. Since then we have (I may say with propriety,) prospected somewhat thoroughly a portion of your county, Buena Vista and the entire western portion of what we believe to be New Mexico. We have found gold, silver, copper, tin and lea...

A Prospecting tour on the Heads of the Kaweah and Kings River. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 23 June 1860

A Prospecting tour on the Heads of the Kaweah and Kings River. Mr. Editor: — Beleiving that all information is acceptable to the readers of your newspaper, that tends to further their interests, and to the advancement of the inttrsts of Tulare County generally: I send you, as well as my powers of descrption will permit, a brief account of the incidents and result, of a prospecting expedition in the Sierra Nevadas north and east of the Four Creek Valley. Having been a resident of Tulare for a number of years, and not beleiving in the common impression among the people in the Valley, that there was no gold in the mountains east of Tulare Valley, I came to the conclusion, at the commencement of the present month, that I would make a trip into the mountains, examine and prospect for myself. I accordingly obtained the articles necessary for a trip of the kind, and started with two other persons on the seventh inst., for the field of our intended expedition. Traveling the road between the...

Congressional. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 23 June 1860

Congressional. Washington, May 24. The Japanese Ambassadors visited the navy yard to-day, and were received by commander Buchanan with due courtesy. They were conducted through the various workshops, and subsequently witnessed target practice with heavy ordnance, and Dahlgreen rifled cannon. A few experiments were also made with boat howitzers, with all which they were astonished and delighted. The Prince de Joinville also had an opportunity of seeing the result of the rifled cannon, and was lavish in his praises of this great improvement in naval warfare. A party of Japanese were this morning on a tour of inspection of Centre Market. Telegraph Celebration. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 23 June 1860

Telegraph Celebration. On Sunday night last, the information was conveyed to town that on the day following, the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph was expected to reach Visalia. Soon after breakfast on Monday morning, several of our citizens conceived the project of uniting in some suitable demonstration upon the occasion. The popular and gentlemanly road agent of the O. Mail Co., Abe Rapeley. Esq., at once took the matter in hand, and placed at their disposal all of the spare coi'ches of the Company, and his private buggy. lie dispatched a messenger to Cross creek, to ascertain about the time when the wires would be near here, and went indefatigably to work to assist in rendering the affair creditable ; and it is mainly owing to his generosity and exertions that the celebration went off so successfully. Owing to the short space of time in which to make preparations, and procure conveyances, the turn-out was not as large as it otherwise would have been. The procession was principally c...

From Keyesville. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 23 June 1860

From Keyesville. JfNE, 17th 1860 Mr. Shannon: —I have only time to inform you, that "Saltaire" has been visited, not unlike many other places in California, with a conflagration. On Wednesday morning last, a fire broke out in the blacksmith shop and dwelling of John Nicholl, which entirely consumed it, and the house of George Clency. Mr. Clency, was absent—having gone to Mono. Two of the houses of Jas. Caldwell, Esq. were in imminent aanger. Yours, P. ROMAN STECK. We publish a communication on the first page from Mr. Farley, who has been on a prospecting tour for some months in the south-eastern portion of this county, who is of the opinion that he has found good mines, but sufficient is not yet known to warrant the assertion that they are rich. In a few weeks more we shall be advised in regard to them. The suggestions to our citizens urging the necessity of constructing good roads is well worthy the serious consideration ol every citizen of the county. They should be prepared to ac...

Senator Gwin on the Overland Route. In the Bulletin of 23d May, (says the S. F. By the overland mail which readied here yesterday, we have Mr. Gwin's reply, which, with Mr! Gordon's letter to him enclosing the memorial alluded to, we here lay before our readers: MR.
