WEDNESDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 20, 1850 I ..,.|, IlMmigration. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 20 February 1850

WEDNESDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 20, 1850 I ..,.| , IlM migration. The immigration of foreigners to the shoros of California has continued throughout tho winter, find tho Opening spring finds the influx at this port nono the less. They come from South America, and from the Knglish colonies of the South Pacific, from China and from the Hawaiian Island*, (though in fewer numbers) and are the mmc hetcrogenous mass of gold diggers, composed of persons of ovory rank and station in lifo— of all characters nnd complexions. With Sydney, N. S. W., wo have now regular communication, and our merchants count with confidence upon advices every month, of the stato of tho markets there. Each arrival releases from tho confines of ship board a crowd of Sydney immigrants, among whom there aro always oxecptionablo characters, but for whoso general deportment nnd honest worth wo may speak favorably. Wo fear that our people aro over-preju-diced against this class of foreign immigration, for we cannot conceiv...

LOCAL MATTERS. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 20 February 1850

LOCAL MATTERS. Right of trial by Jury. — We were in Judge Almond's court a few minutes Monday morning, and from what we couldJearn in an argument by Judge Smith it appeared that he was contending for a right of trial by Jury, and that this right has been doubted in certain cases. — We have always understood that this privilege was guaranteed by the Constitution of every State, and of the United States to every citizen. Judges should be partioularly cautious how they deprivo citizens of this right, and assume to theiuselve^the dictatorial power of acting as judge and juror. We have heard of many eoinplnints of power of this kind assumed which we tru-t are unfounded. A« independent journalists wo may hereafter speak on this bubjeot.
