Breeding New Grasses. WERRIBEE MAY ATTEMPT IT. PREPARATIONS FOR PASTURES [Newspaper Article] — Port Lincoln Times — 14 October 1927

[?] WERRIBEE MAY ATTEMPT IT. - PBUEPARATioNS FOR PASTURES ] One of the next experiments that may be undertaken at the State Re Bearch Parm at Werribee (Victoria), is the production of strains of grasses lhat will prove most suitable for the improvement of pastures under the conditions experienced in Victoria/ Much has been done there in the breeding of wheats which has proved of annreciable value to wheat growers, andk there seems to be no reason why similar work should not be under taken for the benefit of the stock owner and grazier. -In America re cently a drought-resisting grass was obtained from Korea, and it is hoped to develop it in the United States. If Werribee could do the same for Victoria it would materially add to its achievements. Speaking at a re cent field day, the irrigation officer (Mr. C. L. Bartels) mentioned that the production of such grasses was the greatest requirement nn me mwn,, He hinted at the possibility of it being attempted. A clover which deserved muc...

If the small flockmaster would make the most of bis hundred or so sheep he must give close attention to methods of nock improvement If he is so situated that wool is the chief item of income then he must concentrate on high-class merinos. If he owns pastures that will ensure the production ot, prime carcases when values are highest then the dual pur pose or crossbred animal will bring most money to his coffers. In crossbreeding for wool and meat production there must be a mating of the merinc with one of the longwopl or British , breeds. 7 If carcase' development is the main feature the long ...
